Library Assistant, Kingston Community Library, Kingston, NH (P/T)
The Kingston Community Library seeks a part-time library assistant to perform circulation duties.
The Kingston Community Library is a vibrant public library serving approximately 6,500 residents of Kingston and neighboring communities. We are committed to providing welcoming, inclusive, and responsive library services for patrons of all ages. Located about 15 minutes southwest of Exeter, the library is in a rural/suburban area. We currently have a staff of 9 that includes the director, assistant director, children’s librarian, and library assistants.
Dutiesand Responsibilities
The following functions are indicative of the duties and responsibilities associated with the library assistant position. These duties are not intended to be all-inclusive. Other library-related projects and duties will be assigned when needed and appropriate.
- Provide welcoming, inclusive, and responsive customer service to all patrons.
- Check in/out library materials
- Answer phone
- Assist patrons in locating and selecting materials using the library catalog
- Promote library activities and services to patrons
- Assist patrons with public computers, printing, wireless access, digital resources, and basic technology questions.
- Assist patrons with photocopier machine and fax
- Receive money from patrons for copies, ongoing book sale, and other income sources
- Examine materials on shelves to verify accuracy of placement (shelf-reading & shifting as needed)
- Assist with processing new materials purchased by the library
- Attend monthly staff meetings at 5pm on the first Wednesday of each month.
- Strong customer service and interpersonal skills
- Comfort using computers and learning new software
- Ability to communicate clearly in person, by phone, and in writing
- Ability to manage multiple tasks in a busy public service environment
- Commitment to patron privacy and confidentiality
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to lift up to 25 pounds, bend, reach, push book carts, and stand for extended periods of time.
High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate's or bachelor's degree preferred. Library, customer service, retail, office, or related experience is preferred. Experience working with teenagers is a plus.
Schedule:
15–25 hours per week, including daytime, evening, Saturday shifts every other week, and monthly required two hour staff meeting. Specific schedule to be determined based on library needs and applicant availability.
Starting pay: $14.50 per hour. Benefits include paid vacation, paid sick leave.
