Position #21282 – Full‑time

Salary: $34.14–$46.63 per hour.

Summary

The State of New Hampshire seeks a Highway Maintenance Project Engineer to formulate, plan, direct, and evaluate multiple civil engineering and supervisory functions within a Highway Maintenance District.

Your Experience Counts

Each additional year of approved formal education may substitute one year of required work experience and vice‑versa.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education/

    Experience:

    • Master of Science in Civil Engineering (or Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering with an MBA) + 1 year post‑PE registration experience; or
    • Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering + 3 years post‑PE registration experience; or
    • Associate’s degree in Civil Technology + 5 years post‑PE registration experience.
  • License/Certification:
    • Professional Engineer (PE) license in Civil/Civil Highway/Geotechnical/Structural Engineering.
    • Valid driver’s license and/or transportation access.
  • Other Requirements: Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) must meet agency minimums.
Preferred Qualifications

In‑depth knowledge of construction techniques and practices.

After‑Hire Requirements

Licensed Professional Engineer in New Hampshire within one year of employment.

Career Advancement Opportunities

In‑band and broad group level advancement are not available.

Responsibilities
  • Supervise, plan, coordinate and direct design and construction of multiple complex transportation projects to ensure compliance with department goals and requirements.
  • Prepare cost estimates for infrastructure improvement projects.
  • Review and modify plans and specifications to adapt to field conditions.
  • Authorize use of construction/maintenance materials, equipment, and procedures.
  • Analyze district operations and direct future actions through complex administrative and engineering duties.
  • Direct and supervise staff in the completion of required records (MATS, Lawson, GHRS).
  • Exercise engineering judgment affecting public and worker safety to reduce liability.
  • Communicate with the public, contractors, media, and represent the department at meetings.
  • Train, evaluate, and supervise staff, delegating assignments.
  • Provide maintenance expertise during project development and review plans and contract proposals.
  • Consult with specialists to formulate efficient construction and maintenance methods.
  • Serve as temporary District Highway Maintenance Engineer during absences.
  • Respond to emergency situations at any hour to protect the highway system and public safety.
