The CNC Programmer is responsible for developing, modifying, and validating CMM and gauge inspection programs to ensure accurate measurement and quality of machined components. This role supports production and engineering through inspection planning, data analysis, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement. Programmers operate at varying levels of experience, with increasing responsibility in complexity, independence, and technical leadership.
Job Duties and Responsibilities:- Create and modify CMM and gauge inspection programs using 3D CAD models and engineering drawings for simple to highly complex components.
- Develop and maintain programming standards, best practices, and operator-friendly prompts to support efficient machine operation.
- Perform prove‑out of inspection programs, validating navigation, logic, and measurement accuracy.
- Conduct GR&R studies and correlate automated inspection results with mechanical inspection methods.
- Collaborate cross‑functionally to improve inspection strategies, support manufacturability, and provide feedback on engineering drawings.
- Interpret and communicate CMM results, including graphical reporting and SPC analysis to support process control, troubleshooting, and design improvements.
- Develop reporting templates and documentation to support consistent data analysis and communication.
- Provide inspection support, training, and verification for machined components using available measurement technologies.
- Configure, calibrate, and maintain CMM/gauge stylus systems; troubleshoot issues and coordinate with equipment vendors as needed.
- Identify, design, and manage fixturing solutions to support accurate and repeatable inspection of complex components.
- Support or lead selection, specification, and implementation of new inspection equipment and technologies.
- Create and maintain inspection documentation including inspection plans, reports, GR&R studies, correlation reports, and related quality records.
- Contribute to ISO‑related procedures and ensure compliance with quality standards and processes.
- Participate in root cause analysis and problem‑solving activities to address internal and external quality issues.
- Engage in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance quality, efficiency, and inspection capabilities.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment through 5S practices.
- Work independently at higher levels to prioritize tasks, mentor others, and support team development.
- Support cross‑functional work and adapt to overtime or shift changes based on business needs.
- Maintain regular attendance and punctuality.
Skills:
- High school diploma or GED required;
Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Manufacturing, Quality, or related field preferred. - 3–5+ years of CMM/CNC programming experience using automated inspection software; more advanced experience expected at higher levels.
- Experience with inspection software such as Calypso, PC‑DMIS, Modus, ATOS, or similar platforms.
- Strong understanding of engineering drawings, GD&T (ASME Y14.5), and inspection methodologies.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and 3D CAD models.
- Experience conducting GR&R studies and applying SPC analysis to support process improvement.
- Working knowledge of G and M codes; advanced proficiency expected at higher levels.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and related tools; exposure to program management or version control tools preferred.
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Effective time management and ability to work independently.
- High attention to detail and commitment to quality.
- 5+ years of CMM programming experience and/or related quality inspection experience.
- Ability to independently develop inspection strategies for complex and highly complex components.
- Advanced knowledge of GD&T and application to inspection, process control, and design feedback.
