Position: CIVIL ENGINEER I - III

Job Summary

The State of New Hampshire, Department of Transportation, Bureau of Construction, is hiring for Civil Engineer I, II, and III positions on a full‑time basis. Salary ranges as follows:
Civil Engineer I $22.50–$30.02 per hour, Civil Engineer II $25.40–$34.14 per hour, Civil Engineer III $28.74–$38.85 per hour.

Responsibilities
  • Review and approve utility, excavation, and access permits within the state right‑of‑way.
  • Inspect projects for compliance with applicable regulations and standards.
  • Assist in preparing the annual district resurfacing program through coordination with field and engineering staff and other bureaus.
  • Review procurement of consumable goods, highway maintenance materials, and equipment.
  • Respond to emergency situations to protect the transportation system and maintain public safety.
  • Maintain records and provide field support for the Sponsor‑A‑Highway Program.
  • Collect data, prepare reports, and review plans and proposals for various activities within the district.
  • Investigate and make recommendations regarding complaints and inquiries from the public and government officials.
  • Adhere to state and department rules and policies, including risk management, safety, and environmental standards.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Civil Engineer I
    • Bachelor’s degree in engineering from an accredited institution (no experience required).
    • OR
      • Associate’s degree in engineering or civil technology (2 years post‑graduate experience required).
      • Valid driver’s license and statewide transportation coverage.
      • Motor Vehicle Record meets Department standards.
    • No trainee option.
  • Civil Engineer II
    • Master’s degree in engineering (no experience required).
    • OR
      • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (18 months post‑baccalaureate experience required).
      • OR
        • Associate’s degree in engineering or civil technology (18 months experience at a level equivalent to Civil Engineer I and 2 additional years of Engineering Technician experience).
      • Valid driver’s license and statewide transportation coverage.
      • Motor Vehicle Record meets Department standards.
    • No trainee option.
  • Civil Engineer III
    • Master’s degree in engineering (2 years post‑baccalaureate experience required).
    • OR
      • Bachelor’s degree in engineering (4 years post‑baccalaureate experience required).
      • OR
        • Associate’s degree in engineering or civil technology (4 years experience equivalent to Civil Engineer I and 2 additional Engineering Technician years).
      • Valid driver’s license and statewide transportation coverage.
      • Motor Vehicle Record meets Department standards.
      • Evidence of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (NCEES).
    • No trainee option.

  • In‑Band Advancement:
    Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (NCEES) – must satisfy eligibility and pass the exam.
  • Broad Group Level Advancement: 17‑2050 Civil Engineers Level 1 to Level 2 (for Civil Engineer II) and Level 2 to Level 3 (for Civil Engineer III). Eligibility criteria per Department policy.
Additional Requirements
  • Valid driver’s license and access to transportation for statewide travel.
  • Motor Vehicle Record must meet the minimum standards established by the Department of Transportation.
