Field Engineering Technicians perform routine technical and, at higher levels, administrative duties at construction project sites, field offices, and laboratories. Responsibilities include testing, surveying, measuring, documenting, and ensuring compliance with contract specifications.
Minimum Qualifications Field Engineering Technician I- Education:
High school diploma or equivalency. - Experience:
Two years as an Engineering Aide, with at least one year at a level equivalent to Engineering Aide II. - Or:
Associate’s degree in engineering, landscape, architecture, forestry, horticulture, environmental studies, agronomy, geology, soil science, or earth science; no experience required. - License/Certification:
Valid driver’s license. - Other:
Motor Vehicle Record meets DOT standards.
- Education:
High school diploma or equivalency. - Experience:
Three years as an Engineering Aide or Technician, with at least one year at a level equivalent to Engineering Technician I. - Or:
Associate’s degree as above with at least one year of experience at an equivalent level. - License/Certification:
Valid driver’s license. - Other:
Motor Vehicle Record meets DOT standards.
- Education:
Associate’s degree in a relevant field. - Experience:
Three years as an Engineering Aide or Technician, with two years at a level equivalent to Engineering Technician II. - License/Certification:
Valid driver’s license. - Other:

Responsibilities Field Engineering Technician I- Conduct field tests of soils, concrete, and bituminous materials to ensure conformance with specifications.
- Assist in inspecting contractor performance.
- Document information and assist in preparing project records.
- Perform audits of project records and correct errors.
- Maintain engineering and technical data using surveying and drafting equipment.
- Check layout and placement of roadway and bridge construction items.
- Inspect contractor performance for compliance.
- Conduct or supervise field tests to ensure conformance.
- Make field measurements for documentation and payment.
- Prepare project records and assist in documentation.
- Perform audits and correct errors.
- Maintain technical data with surveying and drafting equipment.
- Use surveying and drafting equipment as required.
- Check layout and placement of roadway and bridge items.
- Administer minor resurfacing and highway contracts.
- Oversee phases of engineering construction projects for compliance.
- Perform or supervise field testing of soils, concrete, and bituminous materials.
- Make field measurements and calculate progress payments.
- Document and prepare project records.
- Assist in safety device inspections.
- Oversee audits of project records.
- Check layout for bridges, drainage structures, buildings, and roadway.
- Administer resurfacing and minor roadway/bridge contracts as a Contract Administrator.
Base salary ranges from $15.93 to $26.41 per hour depending on level.
