Position: CONSERVATION OFFICER I

Overview

The NH Fish and Game Department, Law Enforcement Division, is hiring a full‑time Conservation Officer I. The role involves enforcing state laws related to fish, wildlife, and marine resources, off‑highway recreational vehicles, and snowmobiles, as well as conducting search and rescue operations in the woods and inland waterways.

Minimum Qualifications

Official college transcripts, DD 214 forms, or full‑time police certification required.
Associate’s degree or 60 credit hours from an accredited institution OR high school diploma/high‑school equivalency credential plus:
- Two years full‑time experience as a certified police officer in a recognized jurisdiction OR two years full‑time military active duty with an honorable discharge.
Upon appointment, candidates must obtain a New Hampshire driver’s license.

Special Requirements

U.S. citizenship; must be 21 years old within one year of the written examination.

Vision: 20/40 uncorrected or 20/20 corrected per eye; hearing: normal, no hearing aids required.

Selection process includes a written examination, a physical aptitude and agility test, an oral board interview, and conditional offers require polygraph, psychological, and medical examinations. Background investigations are mandatory.

Must obtain and maintain full‑time law enforcement officer certification per NH Police Standards and Training Council, including a physical performance test at least every three years.

Residency: must accept employment anywhere in the state and establish residency within the assigned patrol area after training.

Work schedule:

days, nights, weekends, holidays, and on‑call for emergencies or search and rescue missions.

Physical: lift at least 50 pounds and drag 175 pounds through brush, woods, or dense forest.

Recommended Work Traits

Strong knowledge of wildlife, off‑highway recreational vehicle, snowmobile, motor vehicle, and boating regulations.
Familiarity with arrest procedures, evidence, and court processes.
Investigation, evidence preservation, and communication skills.
Firearms proficiency and life‑saving techniques.
Ability to work collaboratively with public and allied law enforcement; sound judgment; stress resilience; and commitment to continuous training.

Responsibilities

Identify violations and enforce applicable laws and regulations related to wildlife, natural resources, OHRVs, snowmobiles, motor vehicles, boats, and public safety.
Patrol roads, waters, and woodlands using foot patrols, OHRVs, snowmobiles, watercraft, and other necessary equipment, including emergency high‑speed pursuits.
Investigate and apprehend violators; obtain evidence, conduct arrests, and, when necessary, use force, including deadly force.
Prepare investigative reports, accident diagrams, citations, affidavits, complaints, and warrants; recommend legal action; prosecute cases; testify when required.
Operate patrol boats in all weather conditions; inspect commercial and recreational vessels for compliance with federal and state fishing regulations.
Respond to and investigate OHRV and snowmobile accidents, hunting incidents, and shootings; provide emergency medical treatment in remote areas.
Handle, drag, lift, and transport wildlife; dispose appropriately; investigate public‑health‑related cases.
Demonstrate proficiency with handguns, shotguns, rifles, and other firearms in stressful situations.
Conduct search and rescue missions, including carrying injured or deceased individuals and providing medical treatment across various terrains and seasons.
Supervise and train probationary officers, deputies, and volunteers on search and rescue, GPS, evidence collection, search warrants, and related skills.
Provide safety and conservation education to sporting organizations, schools, and the public, advocating department missions and enhancing compliance.

Compensation

USD 25.96/hr – 34.39/hr
