- Permits and Licensing Unit, has a part-time vacancy for a Permits and Licensing Unit Assistant I (Program Assistant I). This position is part-time, cannot exceed 29.5 hours per week and does not offer health insurance benefits.
Summary: Performs diverse duties to review, verify and process transactions and to conduct related functions of the Division of State Police, Permits and Licensing Unit.
YOUR EXPERIENCE COUNTS: Each additional year of approved formal education may be substituted for one year of required work experience and/or each additional year of approved work experience may be substituted for one year of required formal education.

Equivalent combination of 1 year of education and experience after completion of high school. - License/Certification:

Must pass a background investigation including a fingerprint-based criminal record check and motor vehicle record check.

When applicable, the work of an employee in trainee status in this position shall be overseen by a fully qualified individual. An employee in trainee status shall meet the minimum qualifications within the period of time specified on the SJD, not to exceed one year of being hired into this position.
RESPONSIBILITIES:- Reviews applications from the public for completeness and accuracy and verifies information against current laws, administrative rules, and information obtained from a variety of databases to determine eligibility for permits or license requests.
- Conducts general research into criminal history record information and applies knowledge of federal or state statues relating to permits and licensing regulations to determine preliminary approval or denial of various licenses, permits and privilege requests submitted to the Permits and Licensing Unit. Consults with supervisors to verify approval or denial determinations and applies as appropriate.
- Corresponds with the public and law enforcement agencies to communicate the approval, delay or denial of license, permit or privilege, and explains policies and procedures. Obtains clarification from law enforcement or the courts on information relating to criminal records.
- Achieves and maintains proficiency operating within State Databases in the applications of National Crime Information Center (NCIC), National Instant Checks (NICS) or any other software application utilized by the Permits and Licensing Unit.
- Uses established filing systems and workflow processes maintained by unit areas such as the Gun Line, Counter, Non-Resident Concealed Permits and Return of Firearms and purges records in accordance with State law.
- Maintains working relationships with state personnel, law enforcement agencies, and federal law enforcement such as Federal Bureau of Investigation and Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms agency to ensure efficient and accurate communication. Builds and maintains an understanding of state and federal laws, requirements and disqualifiers.
- Communicates with Federal Firearms Licensees (FFLs) to make notification of inquiry results and provide guidance on procedures and policies.
- Prepares reports of caseload, including queued and processed requests, and presents to supervisor for decision-making related to workflow, training needs and coverage adjustments.
