General Services Department - Highways & Utilities Division

Days, Monday - Friday, Overtime is a requirement.

Open until filled. Will review applications daily.

Performs work involving operating complex construction, grounds maintenance, and right-of-way equipment. Operates backhoe for water line repairs and helps in the ditch in making these repairs. Repairs and maintains roads, fields, and rights-of-way; lays out and maintains graves; performs cemetery and grounds maintenance; performs traffic control duties; performs minor repairs and maintenance on equipment. Requires overtime.

• Operates complex construction equipment in maintenance of the water distribution system.
• Operates backhoe, tandem axle dump truck, vactor machine, tapping machines and other equipment used for water distribution maintenance.
• Labors in the ditch in making these repairs as well as minor maintenance on the equipment.
• Operation and maintenance of fire hydrants.
• Operates complex construction and maintenance equipment such as tandem axle dump trucks, tractor trailers, sand or gravel hoppers, front end loaders, steel wheel rollers, skid steers, and backhoes to transport material and perform maintenance activities.
• Operates pothole patching vehicle inserts.
• Supervises operations of pothole patching crew members.

Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED; and one year of related experience; or any combination of education, training and experience which provides the knowledge, skills and abilities required for the job.

Valid New Hampshire Class (B) Commercial Driver's License with air brake endorsement. May be required to possess valid New Hampshire Class (A) Commercial Driver's License with air brake and/or other appropriate endorsement.

• Knowledge of rules and precautions related to roadway and equipment safety.
• Techniques and practices used in road and right-of-way repair and maintenance activities.
• Techniques and practices used in the maintenance of a water distribution system.

• Operating various light and heavy construction/maintenance and right-of-way equipment.
• Operating, maintaining, and using heavy motor equipment including operation over rough, icy, and unstable surfaces.
• Performing simple routine maintenance on equipment.
• Performing repair and maintenance on right-of-way.
• Performing and repair of water distribution system apparatus.

• Understand and follow oral and written instructions.
• Perform duties while standing, walking, bending, crouching, or stooping.
• Frequently lift light and heavy objects.
• Climb ladders.
• Use tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
• Distinguish between shades of color.

While performing the essential functions of this job, the incumbent is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb, balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; exert 20 to 50 pounds of force.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include distance vision, ability to discriminate between colors, and ability to adjust focus.

While performing the essential functions of this job, the incumbent is regularly required to lift and/or move objects weighing up to 100 pounds.
