Responsible for the tax payables function which includes remitting timely payments to state departments and reconciliation of accounts.
Surplus Lines Tax Specialist Job Profile Summary The Surplus Lines Tax Specialist supports the accurate and timely processing, reconciliation, and compliance of surplus lines tax filings across multiple jurisdictions. In this role, you will help ensure filing data is complete, submissions meet state requirements, and records are maintained with a high level of accuracy. Working under general supervision, you will partner with internal teams, resolve routine to moderately complex issues, and contribute to process improvements that support efficiency, compliance, and strong business outcomes.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:- Prepare, review, and support surplus lines tax documentation and reporting requirements across multiple states.
- Monitor filing deadlines and help ensure submissions align with applicable state surplus lines tax regulations.
- Reconcile tax payments, maintain accurate records, and research or resolve discrepancies in a timely manner.
- Partner with internal teams to gather data, validate policy information, and support accurate filings.
- Assist with research related to regulatory updates and help maintain internal procedures as requirements change.
- Support audits by organizing documentation, responding to inquiries, and providing accurate records when needed.
- Maintain organized tax-related files and records to support easy retrieval, review, and inspection.
- Identify opportunities to improve processes, strengthen accuracy, and create greater efficiency in day-to-day work.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Associate degree in Accounting, Finance, Business, or a related field preferred.
- 2+ years of experience in tax support, insurance operations, accounting support, or a related administrative role required.
- Experience with multi-state surplus lines tax regulations, property and casualty insurance, or regulatory filing processes is highly desirable.
- No specific certifications, licenses, or registrations are required.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including the ability to organize, review, and analyze large data sets.
- Strong attention to detail with a commitment to accuracy, completeness, and timely follow-through.
- Ability to research state-specific requirements and apply updates to filing processes and procedures.
- Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to prioritize work and meet deadlines.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across internal teams and external partners.
- Ability to work independently while also contributing to a collaborative, fast-paced team environment.
- Comfort identifying process improvements and helping implement practical solutions that improve efficiency and reduce risk.
