OverviewGPI is a multi‑discipline engineering firm that has been providing planning, design, and construction services for transportation infrastructure and building system projects across the United States for over 50 years.
Responsibilities- Perform daily field inspections and observations of contractor work for heavy highway and/or bridge construction projects, including earthwork, subgrade, asphalt, concrete, reinforcing steel, structural steel, MOT, safety devices, and utilities.
- Measure, compute, record, and maintain contract quantities for contractor payment.
- Read and interpret project plans, specifications, and standards.
- Perform and/or observe material sampling and testing in accordance with project standards and specifications.
- Ensure contractor work and materials meet standards and specifications.
- Properly document daily project progress, including work performed, conformance/nonconformance with plans/specifications, manpower, equipment, contract quantities, and extra work.
- Enter and record project progress, materials, and documentation.
- Identify and communicate project issues to project managers and the contractor.
- Identify, assess, and communicate unsafe conditions with the contractor.
- Construction work experience with an understanding of construction means and methods, ranging from Technician 1 to Technician 5.
- Previous inspection experience in transportation‑related projects is required.
- Experience may be in federal, municipal, DOT, ports, or marina projects.
- Preferred certifications: NCDOT Concrete, QMS Roadway, Conventional Density, ABS Sampling, Borrow Pit Sampling, and/or Level II Erosion and Sediment Control.
- Maintain a valid driver’s license with a clean motor vehicle report (MVR).
- Possess a personal vehicle for use on or around a job site.
- Read, write, and understand plans and directions in English.
- Basic computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint, and Microsoft Teams.
- Able to stand for approximately 3 to 8 hours per day.
- Able to traverse an uneven construction job site with elevation changes up to 19 inches.
- Able to climb and descend ladders to platforms ranging from 6 to 20 feet.
- Able to wear personal fall arrest equipment and work at heights of 6 feet or more.
- Able to wear required PPE (hard hats, safety vests, work boots, and/or safety glasses/goggles).
- Able to move equipment or specimens weighing up to 50 pounds.
