The Adams School of Dentistry, established in 1950 and made possible by an Act of the North Carolina General Assembly in 1949, is now part of a dynamic Health Science campus! The school provides oral health care to more than 90,000 patients each year and provides additional in‑kind services totaling more than $3.6 M annually through four student‑led free dental clinics and other charitable care events.

The Adams School of Dentistry is one of six health science schools (Dentistry, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Social Work, Public Health) at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is the first dental school in the state of North Carolina.

The ASOD consists of seven (7) Academic Departments:
Biomedical Sciences, Craniofacial and Surgical Care (Craniofacial Center, Geriatrics/Special Care, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, and Oral Medicine), Restorative Sciences (General Dentistry, Operative & Biomaterials, and Prosthodontics), Pediatric Dentistry and Dental Public Health, Orthodontics, Diagnostic Sciences (Oral Microbiology, Orofacial Pain/Sleep, Pathology and Radiology) and Periodontology, Endodontics and Dental Hygiene (one department).

Currently the ASOD has 1,099 incumbents, filling 596 faculty employees (421 non‑paid adjunct status, 175 in‑pay status), 77 fellows, 31 post‑docs, 34 EHRA‑NF regular staff employees, 5 EHRA‑NF temporary staff employees, 249 SHRA regular non‑temporary staff employees, 41 SHRA temporary staff employees and 66 student worker employees, and we have active recruitments for faculty and staff! It is an exciting time to join the Adams School of Dentistry as we finalize a new strategic plan and embark on exciting team initiatives!
