Help shape how Freeport grows, protects its coastline, and takes care of the infrastructure that keeps our community running. If you're organized, curious, and want work that blends the outdoors with real operational impact, this is the role for you.

Why Freeport

Freeport is a vibrant coastal community of roughly 9,000 residents on Casco Bay, home to L.L.Bean's flagship campus, 37 miles of tidal shoreline, Wolfe's Neck Woods State Park, and the Desert of Maine. Just 20 minutes from Portland, Freeport offers small-town character and easy access to the best of coastal Maine.

About

The Role

This new, professional-level position supports the Public Works Director, splitting time between environmental compliance work (stormwater permitting, field investigations, regulatory reporting) and departmental operations (budget tracking, procurement, grant writing, and administration). No prior environmental compliance experience? No problem, we'll invest in training and mentorship to help you grow into the technical side of the role.

What You’ll Do
  • Coordinate environmental compliance, including MS4 stormwater and landfill permitting
  • Conduct field visits to evaluate and help resolve environmental issues, with training provided
  • Support budget monitoring, asset management, and capital project tracking
  • Research and draft grant applications and procurement documents (RFPs/RFQs)
  • Handle department administration, from payroll and accounts payable to records and reporting
  • Connect Public Works with Codes Enforcement, Planning, and the public
What We’re Looking For
  • A degree in environmental science, public administration, business, or a related field, or equivalent experience
  • Strong Excel, Word, Outlook, and Teams skills, or the ability to pick them up quickly
  • A sharp, organized communicator who enjoys variety and problem-solving
  • Comfort moving between the office and the field, rain or shine, and a valid Maine driver's license
  • DEP Certified BMP and Post-Construction Stormwater Inspector certification, or equivalent, obtainable within 12 months of hire
What We Offer
  • 4-day work week
  • Salary:
Dependent upon skills, abilities, and experience; $30.94 - 39.43/hour, representing Steps 1 through 6 of the pay scale
  • Full benefits package including health insurance, retirement options, and paid time off
  • Stable, year-round employment with opportunities for skill development
  • A supportive, team-oriented work environment

Review of applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis and continue until the vacancy is filled.

The Town of Freeport is an equal opportunity employer and service provider that celebrates diversity and is committed to creating an inclusive environment for our employees and those we serve.
