Job DescriptionGeneral Definition of Work
Under general supervision, performs a variety of technical and clerical tasks in assisting teachers. The employee may perform a wide range of tasks to support the efforts of teachers, meet the needs of all students, promote positive behavior, and ensure the provision of quality instruction for all students. The employee provides one‑on‑one assistance with academics and behavioral situations and may lead small group activities.
The employee assists teachers with clerical duties. Reports to a principal and/or lead teacher.
Qualification Requirements
- High school diploma
- Minimum of 48 hours of college‑level coursework or Work Keys Assessments
Essential Functions
- Provides individual and small group academic support to students to minimize behavioral interruptions.
- Removes students from situations when appropriate to support student learning and facilitate de‑escalation.
- Implements academic and behavior interventions to individuals and small groups based on teacher direction and helps students practice new behaviors.
- Collects and tracks information related to behaviors targeted as well as frequency and outcomes of interventions implemented.
- Serves as a mentor for students who require Check‑in/Check‑out.
- Serves as a first responder to student behavior concerns.
- Monitors the safety and well‑being of students; monitors student attitudes and encourages self‑esteem; assists students with becoming increasingly independent.
- Monitors student behavior and helps maintain discipline in the classroom.
- Assists students with learning; reinforces and clarifies instructions; conducts short sessions on improving study skills; provides one‑on‑one assistance.
- Maintains standardized records and documentation concerning the progress of students.
- Assists teachers with planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating instructional activities, developing classroom procedures, and preparing necessary materials.
- Performs general housekeeping duties in maintaining an orderly classroom; performs repair and maintenance tasks related to school equipment.
- Performs various clerical duties as needed, maintains records of student progress, develops and files incident reports, grades student papers and scores tests, checks daily attendance, makes copies, develops classroom display and instructional materials, maintains and operates audiovisual equipment, orders supplies, maintains class files, etc.
- Participates in staff development.
- Performs related tasks as required or directed by a supervisor.

Skills Related to Student Behavior
- General knowledge of daily routines of the classroom.
- General knowledge of student handbook rules.
- Some knowledge of the principles, practices, and procedures of academic behavior management.
- Some knowledge of procedures and regulations relating to academic behavior programs.
- Ability to constantly monitor the safety and well‑being of students.
- Ability to motivate students.
- Ability to maintain order and discipline in a classroom.
Teacher Assistant General Skills
- Ability to maintain basic files and records.
- Knowledge of procedures to follow in the event of an emergency.
- Knowledge of the curriculum for multiple grades.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
- Ability to maintain a clean and orderly environment.
- Ability to perform general clerical duties.
- Ability to operate common office equipment.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to use a variety of equipment and classroom tools such as computers, copiers, calculators, pencils, scissors, and equipment for children with special needs.
- Must be able to exert a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move furniture or equipment.
- Due to the amount of time spent standing and/or walking, physical requirements are consistent with those for Light Work.
