Goals and Service Activities
- Strengthening volunteer management and recruitment.
- Conducting outreach and securing resources in support of service activities that meet specific needs in the community.
- Helping build the infrastructure of the sponsoring organization.
- Developing collaborative relationships with other organizations working to achieve similar goals in the community.
Current service activities identified by partner agencies include:
- Prepare and deliver books to families, distribute books at community sites, tutor, and perform capacity‑building services such as researching demographics and data mapping.
- Assist with tutor training, coaching tutors, and supporting volunteer recruitment and tutor management efforts.
- Support volunteer management and recruitment, assist with communications, conduct outreach, and assist with securing resources needed for service activities.
- Event planning and coordination for Kindergarten readiness and educational events, coordination with partner organizations who also provide K‑8 tutoring support and Kindergarten readiness.
- Assist program participants in their goals to learn skills, earn GED’s, engage in community service and civic engagement, and prepare for post‑secondary training and education opportunities.
- Develop family engagement programming and conduct career assessment and career coaching for adult participants/parents.
- Develop and automate organizational systems for efficient and effective transition to in‑house financial and grant management.
- Evaluate participant data for program design recommendations and sustainability efforts.
- Coordinate a family engagement calendar and support family engagement efforts and programming.
- Strengthen collaborative relationships with partner organizations, school districts, local government agencies and institutions of higher learning in Pitt, Martin and Beaufort County.
- Conduct research, mapping community assets.
NC Literacy Corps Ameri Corps Volunteers build capacity for education‑focused nonprofit partners across North Carolina, with specific activities varying by site. They strengthen volunteer management and recruitment by training, coordinating, and supporting literacy volunteers; develop and adapt curriculum and program materials; support book distribution efforts that increase community access to reading materials; conduct outreach and help secure resources to expand site capacity;
strengthen organizational infrastructure and systems, including staff and board education; and build collaborative relationships with schools, higher education institutions, and community partners. They also provide academic support alongside these capacity‑building responsibilities.
Living Allowance, Education award upon successful completion of service, Childcare assistance if eligible, Health Coverage, Training.
