Senior Mechanical Simulation Engineer
Job Summary:
GM Performance Power Units is seeking a Sr. Mechanical Simulation Engineer to join our Power Unit team in Concord, NC. In this role, you will utilize your skills across Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Multi-Body Dynamics (MBD) to support the design, validation, and optimization of high-performance power unit components and systems.
Key Responsibilities:- Perform FEA and MBD simulations on power unit components and assemblies
- Conduct static, dynamic, thermal, and fatigue analyses
- Support performance, reliability, and cost optimization through simulation-based validation
- Collaborate with fellow engineers on high-load and high-performance design challenges
- Validate simulations through correlation with physical testing and measured data
- Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of simulation workflows
- Guide and influence the wider engineering team by providing technical leadership and sharing best practices
- Mentor junior engineers, fostering skill development and technical excellence
- Work closely with manufacturing, quality, and test teams to support product development and validation, and problem solve by finding solutions
- Lead and contribute to design reviews, ensuring technical accuracy, feasibility, and compliance with engineering standards
- Work independently and under pressure in a fast-paced motor sport environment
- Document and report calculation results in line with development cycles
- Ensure adherence to the program plan, meeting milestones, deliverables, and technical objectives, while effectively communicating progress, risks, and mitigation strategies to management
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
- 6+ years of professional experience in race engine design and development field or environment working with high performance engines
- Experience in Finite Element Analysis (FEA) and Multi-Body Dynamics (MBD)
- Strong proficiency in Abaqus, Opti Struct, AVL Excite, Hyper Mesh or similar tools
- Proven expertise in metallic materials used in motor sport
- Excellent problem-solving skills, analytical mindset, and attention to detail
- Strong communication and information-sharing skills, engage and influence teams, ensure clarity of objectives and alignment across engineering disciplines
- Project Management knowledge
- Experience with internal combustion engines or rotating machinery
- Knowledge of fatigue analysis, vibration theory, resonance, and forced response
- Exposure to advanced fluid dynamics, turbulence models, and heat transfer
- Programming or scripting skills (Python, MATLAB)
- Help deliver simulation-driven performance improvements directly impacting race results
- Contribute to the development of industry-leading simulation and validation practices
