GM Performance Power Units - Concord, NC Electromagnetic Simulation Engineer - Onsite Job Summary
GM Performance Power Units (GM PPU) is seeking a skilled and motivated Electromagnetic Simulation Engineer to join our innovative engineering team in Concord, NC. This role focuses on electromagnetic (EM) simulation, analysis, and optimization of MGU-K electric motors and power electronics for Formula 1 power units. The engineer will support design teams by providing high-fidelity EM modeling to optimize performance, efficiency, losses, thermal loads, and manufacturability.
Key Responsibilities- Develop and execute 2D/3D electromagnetic finite element analysis (FEA) models for high power, high speed electric motors using tools like JMAG, Motor-CAD, Ansys Maxwell, or Flux.
- Perform performance mapping, torque-speed curves, field-weakening analysis, efficiency maps, and loss calculations (copper, iron, eddy current, PM losses).
- Analyze and optimize designs for high-speed operation (60k+ RPM), high power density, thermal management, and manufacturability constraints.
- Support transient and harmonic analyses for inverter switching effects, PWM harmonics, and electromagnetic forces.
- Collaborate with mechanical, thermal, controls, and manufacturing teams to integrate EM results into holistic motor design.
- Validate simulation results against test data and support motor prototype development and testing.
- Document analysis methods, results, and recommendations in technical reports and design reviews.
- Stay current with latest EM simulation methodologies and industry best practices.
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related technical field;
Master’s degree preferred. - 3-7 years of experience in electromagnetic simulation for electric motors or machines.
- Proficiency with commercial EM FEA tools (JMAG, Ansys Maxwell, Motor-CAD, Flux, or equivalent).
- Strong understanding of electric machine theory, including PMSM/IPMSM design principles, field-weakening, reluctance torque, and loss mechanisms.
- Experience with performance mapping, efficiency optimization, and thermal-electromagnetic coupling.
- Proficiency in Python, MATLAB, or similar for post-processing, automation, and data analysis.
- Ability to work collaboratively in cross-functional teams and communicate technical results effectively.
- Experience in motor sport, F1, high-performance EV, or aerospace electric motor applications.
- Knowledge of power electronics integration effects on motor performance (inverter harmonics, switching losses).
- Familiarity with advanced motor topologies (axial flux, hairpin windings, variable flux) and high-speed rotor design.
- Experience with parametric optimization, DOE, and machine learning-assisted design workflows.
- Understanding of manufacturing impacts on EM performance (winding factors, material properties, tolerances).
- Experience correlating simulation with dyno/test data and supporting root cause analysis.
- Analytical mindset with strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Proactive and self-motivated with ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Team player comfortable working in fast-paced, high-performance engineering environment.
- Passionate about electric machine design and motor sport technology.
- Effective communicator who can translate complex EM concepts to non-specialists.
