Overview
Duke Energy is seeking a skilled and motivated Technical Training Specialist to support Distribution Engineering and Power Grid Operations (PGO) by designing, delivering, and continuously improving high-quality training solutions that enhance technical capability, workforce readiness, and operational performance. The role also plays a key part in developing, maintaining, and sustaining the Distribution Engineering curriculum.
Responsibilities Training Design & Development- Design, develop, and update instructor‑led (ILT), virtual, and eLearning content using established instructional design practices (e.g., ADDIE).
- Develop training programs to support new systems, tools, and engineering processes.
- Maintain and continuously improve the Distribution Design Engineering curriculum to ensure relevance and effectiveness.
- Ensure all training materials align with current engineering standards, processes, and regulatory requirements.
- Deliver engaging training sessions to Distribution Designers, Engineers, and other Duke Energy employees across multiple regions (in‑person and virtual).
- Facilitate learning experiences that drive knowledge retention, skill development, and on‑the‑job application.
- Support onboarding, progression, and upskilling programs within the Distribution Design curriculum.
- Develop training plans to support business initiatives and project implementations.
- Coordinate logistics for successful training delivery (scheduling, materials, and communication).
- Act as a liaison between Engineering Leadership and the Engineering Training team to align training priorities and solutions.
- Partner with cross‑functional teams to assess training needs and recommend effective learning solutions.
- Represent Distribution Engineering as a Subject Matter Expert on projects and cross‑functional initiatives.
- Conduct Designer observations to maintain awareness of field practices, process changes, and evolving business needs.
- Communicate insights, trends, and training impacts to leadership, including presenting to senior‑level stakeholders.
- Create, schedule, and manage training events and sessions within the LMS.
- Track training completions, attendance, and performance metrics to support compliance and reporting needs.
- Analyze training data to identify gaps and opportunities for improvement.
- Evaluate training effectiveness and recommend enhancements based on feedback and performance trends.
- Support training initiatives from analysis through implementation.
- Stay current on emerging training methods, tools, and industry best practices.

Maximo, GIS systems, CAD, design tools - Power BI (preferred)
- Hybrid; work performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period.
- Hybrid employees must live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility.
- Travel requirements: 15‑25%.
- Relocation assistance provided (as applicable).
- High school diploma or GED and 5+ years of engineering design experience.
- Associate degree in Engineering, Power Systems Management, or other engineering degree.
- Experience collaborating with SMEs, leadership, and cross‑functional teams.
- Strong facilitation, communication, and organizational skills.
- Experience as a Distribution Designer or in an electric utility distribution environment.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Experience in Distribution Engineering, utilities, or Technical Operations environments.
- Familiarity with engineering design processes and technical curriculum development.
- Experience supporting system implementations or process changes.
- Knowledge of training evaluation models (e.g., Kirkpatrick).
- Experience with Learning Management Systems (e.g., My Learning or equivalent).
- Working knowledge of instructional design methodologies (e.g., ADDIE).
- Experience developing and delivering technical training (ILT, virtual, and/or eLearning).
- Experience with engineering tools and systems (e.g., Maximo, GIS, CAD).
