Description of Work Employees in this position determine an applicant’s eligibility for unemployment insurance benefits based on the reason the individual separated from their last employer. Employees review and evaluate claim information and, if needed, investigate conflicting information provided by applicants and employers. Employees also ensure that all pertinent information used to evaluate the claim is documented in the case file and apply applicable law to issue formal eligibility determinations at the end to the review.

This work requires considerable interpretation of laws and rules and the ability to analyze facts to determine the appropriate course of action.

About the Division of Employment Security The North Carolina Department of Commerce is the state's lead agency for economic, community and workforce development. The department works with local, regional, national and international organizations to fulfill its mission to improve the economic well-being and quality of life for all North Carolinians.

The Division of Employment Security is responsible for the administration of the unemployment insurance program in the state of North Carolina. This program is a federal-state partnership, funded by federal and state unemployment taxes, which employers pay on the wages of their employees. Benefits are paid to eligible workers who lose their job through no fault of their own and are able, available, and actively seeking work.

The Adjudication Unit is responsible for making initial determinations for unemployment claims. Employees in this unit gather and review claim information and use North Carolina’s Employment Security Law to make eligibility determinations regarding an individual’s separation from employment. Employees also make first-level decisions regarding an individual’s continued eligibility for benefits based on weekly filing requirements.
