Our Labor & Delivery Unit is a Level II center, which provides care to both normal and high‑risk laboring and ante partum patients. Approximately 2,000 babies are born each year at UNC Health Johnston. Over a thousand patients are also seen in its triage area. The unit consists of 13 labor and delivery rooms, 4 triage rooms, and 2 operating rooms across our 2 campuses, Smithfield and Clayton.
Anesthesia coverage is provided 24/7.
Summary:
Provides competent clinical nursing care consistent with professional standards. Reporting and accountable to the Nurse Manager/Director, the Clinical Nurse is responsible for coordinating and delivering patient care utilizing the nursing process in a hospital setting.
- Education – Participate in identifying and meeting learning needs, attend education programs, use patient education materials, assess readiness to learn, assess developmental level and influencing factors.
- Evaluation of Care – Identify expected patient outcomes, seek guidance in plan of care revision, participate in interdisciplinary discussions, communicate relevant information to promote continuity of care.
- Implementation – Demonstrate competence in care of patients with complex problems, perform bedside point‑of‑care testing, utilize organization and nursing standards, prioritize care, consult resources for complex issues and discharge planning.
- Leadership – Develop goals for professional growth, achieve objectives, facilitate collaboration, participate in unit goals and performance improvement, use communication systems, promote cost‑effective care, give feedback, stay aware of policy and regulations, promote a safe, clean, and secure environment.
- Patient Assessment – Recognize data from complex situations to determine priorities, synthesize assessment data, anticipate discharge needs, develop relationships that promote advocacy.
- Planning – Collaborate with patient/family, use multidisciplinary resources, use full range of communication, address cultural and ethnic issues, prioritize tasks for complex patients.
- Research – Read relevant journals, bring ideas and questions to staff for assessment of applicability.
- Graduation from a school of professional nursing.
- Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the state of North Carolina.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification.
- One (1) year of nursing experience.
