The Office of State Archaeology coordinates and implements a statewide program of prehistoric, historic, and underwater archaeology. This 3‑year, National Park Service HPF grant‑funded Archaeologist II position provides professional, technical, and administrative services to the Office of State Archaeology.
Responsibilities- Environmental Review – review complex project plans and technical archaeological reports for counties impacted by Tropical Storm Helene, including consultation with government agencies, developers, and contractors.
- Geographic Information System (GIS) – map site locations and manage other spatial data layers in the OSA’s GIS database; import shape files for archaeological sites and surveyed areas.
- Technical Assistance and Public Education – assist archaeological consultants with access to OSA files and respond to requests from the public for information, artifact identifications, and technical assistance.
- A graduate degree in archaeology, anthropology, or a closely related field.
- One or more years of experience or specialized training in archaeological research, administration, or management.
- Four or more months of supervised field and analytic experience in general North American archaeology.
- One or more years of experience at a supervisory level in the study of archaeological resources of the prehistoric or historic period.
- Demonstrated ability to carry research to completion.
Physical Requirements
Must be available to work Monday – Friday 8:00am – 5:00pm. Must be able to participate in archaeological field investigations by walking through rough and uneven terrain and working in unfavorable weather conditions including exposure to noise, dust, animals, and insects. Must be able to exert up to 50pounds occasionally, up to 20pounds frequently, and up to 10pounds often with or without accommodation.
Must have a valid driver’s license issued from within the United States or be able to obtain one within 90days of employment. This position is deemed eligible for hybrid telework under DNCR’s Telework Policy.
Applicants may qualify through an equivalent combination of education and experience. Options include:
- Master’s degree or higher in North American archaeology, anthropology, or a closely related field from an accredited institution AND four years of archaeological experience.
- Bachelor’s degree in North American archaeology, anthropology, or a closely related field from an accredited institution AND six years of archaeological experience.
This time‑limited position may extend up to 36months and is eligible for State Benefits. The position is located at 176 Riceville Rd., Asheville, NC 28805.
