The NIEHS Cryo-EM Core is seeking a postdoctoral fellow with prior cryo-EM experience and an interest in cryo-EM core facility management to train in specimen preparation, microscope automation and computational workflows methodologies.
About the positionIn this role, prospective postdocs will contribute to projects using single-particle cryo-EM, cryo-electron tomography, and cryo-FIBSEM to study macromolecular assemblies and cellular systems. Work may include optimizing sample preparation, supporting data collection, processing images, developing automated workflows, documenting protocols, and training users.
Our core houses a 300 keV Titan Krios G4, a 200 keV Talos Arctica, an Aquilos cryo-FIBSEM, multiple cryo-EM sample-preparation systems, and access to NIH high-performance and cloud-computing resources. As such, the core supports research teams across NIEHS in close coordination with complementary core facilities in protein expression and purification, viral vectors, NMR, X-ray crystallography, mass spectrometry, molecular dynamics, and related areas.
This position provides advanced training in cryo-EM sample preparation, data collection, image processing, structure determination, scientific communication, and the operational aspects of running a modern cryo-EM core facility.
Apply for this vacancyWhat you'll need to apply
Interested applicants should send a cover letter, complete CV, and the names of three professional references to Dr. Mario Juan Borgnia at the email below.
Prospective applicants must have a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent doctoral degree in structural biology, biochemistry, biophysics, computer science, engineering, or a related field. Consistent with NIH postdoctoral eligibility, candidates should be within five years of receiving their doctoral degree at the time of appointment and have no more than two years of prior postdoctoral experience.
Prior cryo-EM experience is required, including experience obtained during doctoral training. Applicants must also have strong computational skills, including experience with programming, quantitative analysis, and Linux-based computing environments. Applicants should also have a strong interest in advanced training in cryo-EM, core facility management, automation, method development, and computational workflows.
Excellent written and oral communication skills, a strong record of accomplishment, scientific curiosity, independence, and the ability to work as part of a collaborative team are essential, as this fellow will work closely with Cryo-EM Core leadership, NIEHS investigators, and regional users across NIEHS and other institutions.
