The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community.

$39,244 - $68,679 (effective February 01, 2026)

• Perform journey level duties in the installation, maintenance, and repair of air, gas, water, and waste disposal systems.
• Routinely work assignments where repair is needed and assignments that involve work of special or unusual nature, following specific instructions.
• Use power tools associated with the plumbing trade, including cutting and threading pipe, and be familiar with building, life, and safety codes.
• Solder copper pipe and utilize standard tools and materials required for those procedures.
• Prepare material lists for projects and submit them to the supervisor for review.
• Make lead joints and install various types of plastic pipe; have knowledge in replacing stainless steel and porcelain plumbing fixtures.
• Supervise semi‑skilled male offenders and be prepared for emergency callbacks.

• Working knowledge of the methods of installation and repair of plumbing systems.

High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and two years of experience in the repair, replacement, or construction of piping systems
or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as, or lower than, their current position. If selected, a new salary will be recalculated taking into consideration the quantity of relevant education and experience, funding availability, and internal equity.

Based upon these factors, a pay increase may result.
