The North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services maintains regulatory laboratories that protect consumers and the environment. The Steve Troxler Agricultural Sciences Center (ASC) houses the Food & Drug Protection Division, Pesticide Residue, Animal Disease Diagnostic, and other critical laboratories, including a BSL‑3 facility.
Responsibilities- Supervise maintenance technicians and coordinate subcontractor work for repairs or improvement projects.
- Perform highly skilled maintenance on physical plant operations, including high‑pressure steam boilers, hot water boilers, chillers, cooling towers, incinerators, HVAC, plumbing, electrical systems, and general construction.
- Exercise initiative and judgment to troubleshoot complex systems and ensure continuous laboratory operations.
- Interact with and coordinate subcontractors during repair or improvement projects.
- Travel once per month to the Griffin, Northwestern, and Western satellite laboratories and occasionally work after hours at the Raleigh location.
- Respond to overnight travel when required throughout the state.
- Work safely in environments with necropsies, animal carcasses, biological materials, incineration systems, and associated odors, following safety training and PPE procedures.
- Ensure ability to arrive at the ASC facility within 60 minutes of notice.
- High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) certificate.
- At least two (2) years of experience performing the full range of journey‑level tasks associated with HVAC, plumbing, and/or electrical trades.
- Working knowledge of building codes, blueprints, and building automation control systems.
- Ability to anticipate downstream impacts of mechanical systems and maintain continuous lab operations.
- Ability to provide direction and supervise the work of maintenance technicians and contractors.
- Valid North Carolina driver’s license within 30 days of hire.
- Obtain a pesticides applicator’s license within the first year of employment.
- Current certification by the Environmental Protection Agency as a Type I, II, III, or Universal technician (Title 40, CFR Part 82, SubpartF).
