Description of Work

The work is related to the maintenance and repair of State-maintained roads within Madison County and will report to the Madison County Maintenance Office. It involves a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of State maintained roads.

  • Setting up work zones and installing traffic control devices
  • Repairing asphalt pavements
  • Clearing right of way of debris and hazards
  • Assisting with pipe installation
  • Operating a variety of hand and power tools

This work includes the operation of various equipment that includes but is not limited to an asphalt maintainer, asphalt patch truck, tandem dump truck, crack sealing machine, rollers, sweepers, skid steer, and backhoe.

The position will monitor tasks performed by inmates and other transportation workers, respond to emergencies such as snow and ice removal, downed trees, and traffic control cleanup during normal business hours, emergency callback situations, and scheduled night work.

Requirements
  • Legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire.
  • Possess a current Commercial Driver's License or obtain the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License within 360 days of hire through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (49 CFR 383).
  • Pre-employment drug testing is required.
  • Sign a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) allowing NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.
  • Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post-offer employment evaluation.

Skills and Abilities

/ Competencies
  • Working knowledge of Work Zone Safety and Workplace Safety policies.
  • Working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures.
  • Experience with at least two pieces of Category B Maintenance equipment (asphalt distributor, asphalt mixer, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, ditching machine, force feed loader, lube truck, asphalt maintainer, post driver, skid steer, street sweeper, tandem dump truck, tractor "A" boom mower, truck with aerial device).
  • Experience in one of the following: pipe installation, installation of erosion control devices, snow and ice removal, ditch maintenance, or asphalt patching.
Salary Grade and Salary Range

NC05 - $33,902.00-$59,327.00

Management Preferences
  • Working knowledge of Work Zone Safety and Workplace Safety policies.
  • Working knowledge of standard road maintenance and construction procedures.
  • Experience with at least two pieces of Category B Maintenance equipment (as listed above).
  • Experience in one of the following: pipe installation, installation of erosion control devices, snow and ice removal, ditch maintenance, or asphalt patching.
Minimum Education and Experience
  • High School Diploma or General Education Development (GED) and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Requirements
  • Either possession of a current Commercial Driver's License on the date of hire, or the North Carolina Commercial Driver's License obtained through on-the-job training and all required regulations within 360 days of hire.
