Sign Technician I

The purpose of this position is to install, inspect, repair, maintain, and clean traffic signs and traffic control devices.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Installs, inspects, repairs, maintains, and cleans all signs for the City.
• Installs and sets up emergency and non-emergency road closures and detour routes for City departments; and provide traffic control for special events.
• Generates work orders, enters data, and closes out work orders.
• Calls in coordinates of traffic control devices to ensure proper placement so it does not interfere with underground utilities.
• Maintains equipment and performs routine cleaning on service truck equipment and materials in storage facility.
• Responds to on-call service needs after hours

Supplemental Functions:

• Performs other similar duties as required.

Job Specifications and Qualifications:

Knowledge:

• The techniques of sign installation, maintenance, and repair;
• The techniques of pavement markings installation and repair;
• Setting up work zones;
• Equipment and tools of the trade;
• Applicable local, state and federal laws, rules, and regulations

Licensing and Certifications:

• Valid North Carolina Driver's License.

Working Conditions / Physical Requirements:

• Positions in this class require: standing, fine dexterity, walking, lifting, carrying, sitting, reaching, handling, kneeling, pushing/pulling, climbing, vision, foot controls, balancing, bending, crouching, hearing, twisting, and talking.
• Heavy Work:
  Exerting 50 - 100 pounds occasionally, 25
  -50 pounds frequently, or from 10 up to 20 pounds constantly.
• Incumbents may be subjected to extreme temperature, wetness and/or humidity, respiratory hazards, noise and vibration, and physical hazards

Required Skills:

• Operating a computer and applicable software applications;
• Applying local, state and federal laws, rules and regulations;
• Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to receive work direction

Required Experience:

High school diploma or equivalency, with at least one (1) year of relevant experience; or the City may consider an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job.
