Light Equipment Operator - Utility System Maintenance Job Summary
The City of Corsicana is seeking a qualified individual to operate a variety of light equipment for installation, repair, and maintenance of water distribution and sewage collection systems. This role is responsible for operating backhoe, excavator, skid steer, sewer jetting truck, and various other types of equipment and provides manual labor in the repair and maintenance of City water and sewer systems.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Operate backhoe to dig and backfill trenches.
- Assist in replacing or repairing damaged water and sewer lines
- Assist in unstopping sewer lines; operate sewer jet machine.
- Clean sewerage system according to a regular schedule of preventive maintenance.
- Service and clean equipment.
- Participate in tapping water and sewer lines, leak repair, and meter and meter box installation and repairs
- Operate boring machines to install lines and services beneath pavement and sidewalks.
- Perform other duties as assigned
- High School Diploma or GED is required.
- Two (2) years of experience in utility or equipment operations or other related experience.
- Must have or have the ability to, within two (2) years of the date of hire, to receive and maintain a Class “C” Water Distribution and a Class “IlI” Wastewater license within five (5) years as issued by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).
- An equivalent combination of education and related municipal work experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential functions of the job will be considered.
- Knowledge of materials, maintenance practices, and equipment used in construction or Utilities operations.
- Must have sufficient strength and ability to use shovels, chainsaws, mowers, weed eaters, rakes, and various tools.
- Ability to drive multi-geared trucks safely and effectively.
- Knowledge of and ability to follow safe work practices.
- Ability to read, write, communicate effectively and deal with the public, city employees, and contractors in a willing and courteous manner.
Physical Requirements
- Continuous outdoor work with exposure to extreme weather, noise, dust, fumes, and physical hazards
- Exposure to moving traffic, confined spaces, loud noises, irritants, rodents, and insects
- Ability to bend, lift (up to 100 lbs), climb, and work in ditches, trenches, and wet or muddy areas
- Must be able to safely operate and service equipment
- Specific vision requirements include close vision and ability to adjust focus
- Regular attendance required, including evenings, nights, weekends, and on-call during emergencies and hazardous weather
- Maintain a 100% drug- and alcohol-free workplace
- Pass a pre-employment drug and alcohol screening
- Be subject to random drug and alcohol testing throughout employment
- Must have or have the ability to obtain within 5 years from the date of hire, a Texas Motor Vehicle License Class “B” CDL (minimum) or Class “A” CDL (preferred).
- Maintain a satisfactory driving record
- Demonstrate regular attendance and punctuality
- Successfully complete a one-year probationary period
- Pass a criminal history check, background investigation, and drug screening to be considered for employment

- Basic life insurance equal to 1X the employee’s annual base salary up to $100,000 and Supplemental Death Benefit equal to 1X the annual base salary, reduced to $7,500 after retirement through the retirement system (TMRS)

- Employees accrue sick leave at a rate of one workday for each month employed

- Longevity pay equal to $6.00/month times length of service with the City of Corsicana.
