The Trailer Mechanic is responsible for inspecting, diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining company-owned trailers to keep the fleet safe, compliant, and ready for customer use. This position performs preventive maintenance, DOT-related repairs, brake and suspension work, electrical troubleshooting, door/floor/roof repairs, and other trailer maintenance as needed.

The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with trailer or heavy equipment repair, takes pride in quality workmanship, and can work safely in a shop or yard environment with minimal supervision.

Responsibilities
  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair trailers, including brakes, suspension, air systems, lighting, electrical wiring, tires/wheels, landing gear, doors, roofs, floors, and related components.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and safety inspections in accordance with company standards and applicable DOT requirements.
  • Complete repairs accurately and efficiently to reduce equipment downtime.
  • Document work performed, parts used, and inspection results in the company’s maintenance system.
  • Coordinate with supervisors, fleet management, and parts personnel to prioritize repairs and maintain fleet availability.
  • Perform final safety checks before returning trailers to service.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
  • Assist with welding, fabrication, or road service calls as needed, if applicable.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Prior experience as a trailer mechanic, diesel mechanic, heavy equipment mechanic, or similar maintenance role.
  • Knowledge of trailer systems, including brakes, suspension, air systems, lighting/electrical, tires, and structural components.
  • Ability to use hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and shop equipment safely.
  • Ability to read and follow repair orders, inspection forms, and maintenance procedures.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to operate company vehicles/equipment as needed.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Technical school, vocational training, or a relevant mechanic certification.
  • Experience in trailer leasing, rental, transportation, or fleet maintenance.
  • Familiarity with DOT inspection requirements and trailer compliance standards.
  • Welding and fabrication experience.
  • CDL preferred, if applicable.
  • Ability to use a tablet or computer to enter repair notes, work orders, and parts usage.
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull heavy parts and equipment as required.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, kneel, climb, crawl, and work underneath or around trailers.
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods during the workday.
  • Ability to safely operate tools, shop equipment, and company vehicles/equipment.
