Mechanic II

Manage a route of assigned vehicles which may include but not limited to vehicle maintenance, some repair of vehicle body damage, cleaning and maintaining of assigned shop area and service vehicle, respond to road calls assigned by dispatch, respond to after-hours or emergency requests, and related work assigned. Work is performed under the limited supervision of the Transportation Mechanic Supervisor.

Special Requirements
  • Must hold or be able to obtain a 30-day Inspection Certification (within 6 months of employment)
  • Must hold or be able to acquire a North Carolina Class B Commercial Driver's License with P and S endorsements (within 60 days of employment)
  • Must register in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Clearinghouse.
Additional Potential Requirements
  • Hold or ability to obtain N (Tanker) endorsement with Commercial Driver's License
  • Hold or ability to obtain North Carolina State Vehicle Inspector's License
  • Hold or ability to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • General knowledge of the operation and repair of components, systems, and accessories of school buses, district vehicles, and equipment.
  • General knowledge of tools and equipment including machinery and shop equipment, pneumatic and cordless power tools used in repairs and service.
  • Efficient skill in the use of computers, diagnostic software, and standard office equipment based on district needs.
  • Ability to detect and identify by inspection any worn, defective or faulty parts.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions and to keep records of repair and service operations.
  • Ability to operate standard office equipment for standard email procedures as well as printing or other office needs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and professional working relationships with school officials, associates, students, parents, and the general public.
Education and Experience
  • High school diploma or GED and five years progressive job experience.
  • Working knowledge of vehicle operation and maintenance.
  • Skill to perform manual tasks associated with engine/vehicle maintenance, tire replacement, fueling, vehicle body repair, braking systems, electrical diagnostics, HVAC systems, etc.
  • Skill in operating various machines used in vehicle repair and maintenance.
  • Ability to perform major and minor repairs and service.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Good working knowledge of diesel and/or gasoline engines.
  • Extensive experience and training in vehicle operation, maintenance, and repairs is required.
  • Considerable knowledge of the operating principles of diesel and gasoline engines, transmissions, and aftertreatment systems.
  • Considerable knowledge of the methods used in repairing electrical, fueling, lubricating, and air conditioning systems.
Physical Requirements
  • This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force.
  • Must be able to step up and down repeatedly to get in and out of vehicles.
  • Must be able to access "underneath" school buses and other vehicles to change oil, grease, and service, etc.
  • Work regularly requires standing, walking, using hands to feel, handle, or push and pull and repetitive motions or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling, reaching with hands and arms and lifting and occasionally requires sitting.
  • Work regularly requires working near moving mechanical parts, exposure to fumes or airborne particles and exposure to vibration, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals and/or around Hazardous Materials such as automotive batteries, automatic transmission fluid, anti-freeze, fuel, oil, grease, etc.
  • Exposure to risk of electrical shock.
  • Work is generally in a loud noisy location (Ex. Garage atmosphere, Heavy traffic.)
