Job Description
Starting Date: Immediately
General Definition of WorkPerforms semi-skilled work operating a school bus, transporting students to and from school, activities or events, and related work as assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Transportation Planner.
Education and ExperienceHigh School or GED preferred. Applicant requirement of at least 1 year of driving experience as a licensed operator of a motor vehicle, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be 18 years of age.

Reports toSchool Bus Supervisor/Transportation Planner
Essential Functions- Performs pre- and post-trip school bus inspection; reports operating and equipment deficiencies.
- Transports students to and from school, along with other activities and events.
- Cleans bus inside and out including washing as needed, sweeping, and emptying trash.
- Obeys traffic laws and observes safety regulations for school bus operations.
- Ensures passenger safety; maintains discipline on bus; completes disciplinary forms as needed.
- Conducts periodic emergency evacuation drills.
- Records mileage; maintains records and reports.
- Performs related work as required.
Skills and Abilities
- General knowledge of operating a school bus and the geography of the District and the location of streets; skill in the safe operation of a school bus.
- Ability to read and write.
- Ability to detect malfunctioning equipment related to the operation of a school bus.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with school officials, associates, students, parents and the general public.
- Occasional exertion of up to 10 pounds of force.
- Requires sitting, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, among repetitive motions, and occasionally standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling, and lifting.
- Requires standard vision; vocal communication for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels.
- Requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, operating machines, motor vehicles or equipment, and observing general surroundings and activities.
- Encounters working near moving mechanical parts, outdoor weather conditions, vibration, occasional exposure to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, or blood borne pathogens; may require specialized personal protective equipment.
- Work could be in a moderately noisy location.
- Must be 18 years of age.
- Register in the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Clearinghouse.
- Appropriate training will be provided.
- Valid commercial driver's license with Passenger and School Bus endorsement in the State of North Carolina.
- Pre-employment DOT Drug Test required.
- Pre-employment Criminal/DMV check required.
- Physical Standards Test and all legal requirements of the NC DMV and Cabarrus County Schools.
- Clear criminal background check.
- Safe driving record.
- Health Certificate.
- Depending on the school/site, you must hold or be eligible for an NC Dept. of Health and Human Services Child Care Criminal Background Check and approval letter.
