Construction General Laborer
Join a dedicated team of construction general laborers working on a highly controlled project at a secure facility in Groton, CT. You will support a major site preparation and repair effort that involves intensive manual labor, debris removal, and work around a retaining wall. This role is ideal for individuals with construction or landscaping experience who are comfortable with demanding physical work and strict site rules, including compliance screening and a no–cell phone policy while on site.
Responsibilities:
- Clear and prepare a designated section of land at a secure facility, working as part of a team of 6–8 laborers.
- Carry buckets of debris from the work area to designated dump locations in a safe and efficient manner.
- Assist with leveling the ground near a retaining wall to meet project specifications.
- Support the repair of the retaining wall, including tasks related to concrete work and basic carpentry as directed.
- Perform general construction and demolition duties, including breaking up and removing materials as needed.
- Use basic hand tools such as shovels, grading rakes, and wheelbarrows to move, spread, and grade materials.
- Operate power tools such as drills, hammer drills, and chipping hammers in accordance with safety guidelines.
- Measure and mark materials accurately using a tape measure, including measurements down to 1/16 of an inch.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area by loading, cleaning, and handling materials and tools properly.
- Follow all site-specific rules and security protocols, including strict compliance screening requirements.
- Wear and properly use provided personal protective equipment (PPE), including gloves and other safety gear.
- Adhere to a zero-tolerance policy for cell phone use on site, keeping personal devices off and off site during work hours.
- Collaborate with supervisors and team members to complete tasks on schedule and to quality standards.
- Support landscaping-related tasks as needed, including site cleanup and basic grounds work around the project area.
Essential
Skills:
- 1–2 years of experience in landscaping, construction, or general labor, with comfort performing tough manual labor.
- Proficiency using basic hand tools such as shovels, grading rakes, and wheelbarrows.
- Ability to use a tape measure accurately down to 1/16 of an inch.
- Experience using power tools such as drills, hammer drills, and chipping hammers.
- General construction skills, including working with concrete, hand tools, and power tools.
- Experience with demolition tasks, including material removal and site cleanup.
- Ability to perform physically demanding work for extended periods, including lifting, carrying, and repetitive motions.
- OSHA 10 certification (OSHA 10 Card).
- Valid documentation such as a U.S. passport or birth certificate to meet site access requirements.
- Reliability and willingness to follow strict site rules, including security and safety protocols.
Additional Skills &
Qualifications:
- Masonry experience, including working with retaining walls, is a strong plus.
- Concrete experience, including mixing, placing, or finishing concrete, is preferred.
- Carpentry experience, particularly related to construction and decking, is beneficial.
- Prior experience working in controlled or secure facilities is an advantage.
- Strong teamwork skills and the ability to take direction from supervisors and leads.
- Attention to detail when measuring, cutting, and placing materials.
- Commitment to safety and consistent use of PPE and safe work practices.
