Job Description:
Under general direction, receives and evaluates incoming emergency and administrative requests for emergency services (law enforcement, fire, and EMS); triages requests for service; provides guidance to the public in life-safety situations; and coordinates responses to high-risk, high-stress operations to keep participants safe.
- Education and Experience: High School Diploma/GED and one (1) year of experience in a call center, customer service, computer applications, data entry, and/or telephone communications; or an equivalent combination of related education and experience.
- Licenses/Certifications (required within specified time frames): Valid New Mexico driver’s license (or ability to obtain within 30 days); CJIS/NCIC certification within 12 months; CPR for healthcare providers within 12 months;
Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD) within 12 months;
Emergency Fire Dispatch (EFD) within 12 months;
Emergency Police Dispatch (EPD) within 12 months;
New Mexico Public Safety Telecommunicator within 12 months; ICS 100, 144, 200, 700, 800 within 12 months. - Additional Requirements: Maintain a valid NM driver’s license; pass criminal record and background check; pre-employment drug and alcohol screening; pass 911 typing test (minimum 35 WPM); this is a safety-sensitive position subject to random drug testing and to alcohol/drug testing per County policy and 49

Position reports to the 911 Supervisor or designee and does not supervise others.
Essential Job FunctionsThe following duties are a representative summary and not a comprehensive list. Duties may be added or changed as needed:
- Receive, record, and transmit incoming calls and messages via radio, telephone, and computer systems for local, state, and federal public safety agencies.
- Provide concise and accurate information regarding emergency situations to the public and public safety officials.
- Assist callers with emergency first aid as required.
- Navigate Priority Dispatch Software to determine caller situation, apply the correct protocol, communicate instructions, and dispatch incidents; enter caller information into the computer-aided dispatch system.
- Verify and compose entries in the NCIC system as required.
- Attend required training (classroom, direct supervision, on-the-job).
- Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
- Working knowledge of communications center equipment and software.
- Decision-making in fast-paced, multi-tasking environments.
- Effective oral and written communication.
- Modern office procedures and computer applications (word processing, spreadsheets, databases).
- English usage: spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
- Operate computer systems, telephone systems, and radio equipment efficiently.
- Type rapidly and accurately for data entry.
- Remain decisive, calm, and prompt in stressful situations; project a professional image with the public and officials.
- Maintain confidentiality of information.
- Demonstrate teamwork and build effective relationships with coworkers, the public, and emergency service providers.
- Adapt to a fast-paced, changing work environment.
- Follow instructions, policies, and Standard Operating Procedures.
- Understand emergency service station identifiers and county geography including fringe areas of bordering counties.
Work is performed in a 24/7 emergency communications center, including after-hours and weekends. Work may be high-volume and require extended computer use, speaking, and listening. Shift work, holidays, and overtime may be required. Ability to handle stressful situations and maintain safety. Physical tasks include standing, sitting, lifting up to 20 pounds, and moving documents as needed.
