Ledyard Public Schools is seeking a Study Skills/ Communications Teacher for Ledyard Middle School beginning in the 2025 - 2026 school year. Under the general supervision of the School Principal, the successful candidate will support middle school students in developing essential academic strategies, critical thinking, digital citizenship, and media literacy skills. This position also integrates elements of civic responsibility, historical and evaluative thinking.
The teacher will foster a learning environment that prepares students for academic success and responsible participation in a media-saturated society.
Responsibilities:
- Design and deliver engaging instruction in study skills, communication strategies, and critical thinking tailored to middle school learners
- Teach students effective organization, time management, note-taking, and test preparation techniques to support academic success
- Integrate lessons on digital citizenship, media literacy, and responsible technology use into the curriculum
- Foster students’ ability to evaluate sources, analyze media messages, and develop informed opinions
- Incorporate instruction on civic responsibility, historical context, and ethical decision-making
- Create a supportive, inclusive classroom environment that encourages student participation and collaboration
- Monitor and assess student progress, providing targeted feedback and individualized support
- Collaborate with colleagues, administrators, and families to promote student achievement and well-being
- Use a variety of instructional strategies, including project-based learning and discussion-based activities, to engage diverse learners
- Maintain accurate records of student work, assessments, and progress toward learning goals
- Plan and teach classes on topics such as information literacy, organization, note-taking, goal setting, and technology use
- Promote literacy by creating opportunities and events that include students, families, and staff
- Search standard reference materials, including online sources and the Internet, to answer students' reference questions
- Serve as a resource to the school community
Qualifications:
- One of the following certifications required
- CT 015 English 4-12 or
- CT 215 English Middle School 4-8 or
- CT 062 School Library Media Specialist certification or
- CT 026 History & Social Studies 4-12 or
- CT 226 History & Social Studies Middle School 4-8
- Bachelors from an accredited college or university in education discipline applicable to teaching assignment
- Master’s Degree in related area preferred
- Successful prior library media experience is a plus.
- Extensive knowledge and understanding of the concepts, principles, and methodologies of teaching and learning and of current practices in student organization and executive functioning, connecting core developmental skills to varied components of the middle school curriculum
- Ability to collaborate with colleagues
- Develop and maintain strong partnership with students and their families
- Knowledge of database/ research software and search engines
- Strong instructional skills with the ability to engage and motivate middle school learners
- Proficiency in teaching academic strategies such as organization, time management, and study techniques
- Knowledge of digital citizenship, media literacy, and responsible technology use and awareness
- Ability to teach critical thinking, source evaluation, and informed decision-making
- Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, for clear instruction and collaboration
- Capacity to foster an inclusive, respectful, and supportive classroom environment
- Skilled in integrating civic responsibility and historical/social context into lessons
- Proficient in using technology to enhance teaching and learning
- Ability to differentiate instruction to meet diverse student needs and learning styles
- Collaborative mindset with a commitment to working effectively with colleagues, families, and the school community
