General StatementA competent Special Education Teacher understands student growth and development, demonstrates knowledge of student specific needs and core academic skills, supports the independence of each student as a life‑long learner, effectively assesses student needs and progress, and plans instruction to achieve selected objectives. The Special Education Teacher accomplishes these objectives through effective communication with students, parents, and colleagues and through the use of appropriate techniques and materials.
In addition, the Special Education Teacher meets professional responsibility for continuing growth and fosters cooperative involvement with parents and the community while participating in professional development to employ best practices.
Bridge Kindergarten (K) is a specialized self‑contained classroom designed to support students with special needs transitioning from APPLES prekindergarten into kindergarten. Staffed by a special education teacher and two para educators, the class size is 8‑10 students demonstrating readiness for varying levels of mainstream integration. The primary goal is to provide a supportive environment that fosters their progress toward full inclusion when developmentally appropriate.

Teachers dually certified in TESOL, Bilingual Education, or ESL, with experience in Sheltered Instruction or fluency in a language other than English, will be given preference for all Stamford Public School positions.
