Summary / Goal of Position

English as a Second Language (ESL) adult education instructors teach assigned English language acquisition courses to adult learners by implementing the English Language Proficiency Standards. The instructor plans, organizes, and delivers instruction that supports adult learners in developing English proficiency, enabling them to reach their academic, personal, and professional goals. The instructor fosters a supportive and inclusive learning environment, utilizes student data to inform and refine instruction, and works to ensure that learners meet or exceed adult education program goals related to educational functioning level advancement, workforce readiness, and community engagement.

Essential

Tasks of the Position (Illustrative, not inclusive)
  • Plan and deliver standards-based ESL instruction aligned to the English Language Proficiency Standards and informed by student assessment data;
  • Utilize CASAS and other assessment tools to monitor student progress and adjust instruction to support measurable skill gains and educational functioning level advancement;
  • Create and maintain a supportive, inclusive, and engaging learning environment that promotes student persistence and success;
  • Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse academic, linguistic, and personal needs of adult learners;
  • Integrate workforce readiness skills and real-world applications into instruction to support students' academic and career goals;
  • Encourage and support student engagement both in and outside of the classroom, including activities that promote community involvement and language use in authentic contexts;
  • Maintain accurate and timely student records, including attendance, assessment results, and outcomes, in the LACES database;
  • Collaborate with program staff to support student recruitment, intake, placement, and retention efforts;
  • Participate in data meetings, professional development, and program improvement initiatives;
  • Assist with student assessment and program registration as needed;
  • Support program goals related to measurable skill gains, retention, and transition outcomes;
  • Perform other duties as assigned by program leadership.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong knowledge of English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS) and adult learning principles;
  • Demonstrated ability to use student assessment data to inform instruction and support measurable skill gains;
  • Understanding of educational functioning levels (EFLs), National Reporting System (NRS) metrics, and adult education program accountability measures;
  • Ability to create and sustain a supportive, inclusive, and engaging learning environment for diverse adult learners;
  • Skill in differentiating instruction to meet varying language proficiency levels and learning needs;
  • Ability to integrate workforce readiness and real-world application into ESL instruction;
  • Familiarity with CASAS assessments and LACES data management systems preferred;
  • Strong classroom management and instructional planning skills;
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills when working with diverse student populations and colleagues;
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with program staff and contribute to program improvement efforts;
  • Commitment to student persistence, retention, and overall program success.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required;
    Master's degree preferred;
  • Valid Connecticut adult education endorsement in Teaching English to Non-English Speaking Adults (088) required; additional external diploma program/noncredit mandated programs endorsement (107) preferred;
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience (part- or full‑time) teaching English as a Second Language in an educational setting;
  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse adult learner populations;
  • Experience using student assessment data to inform instruction and support student progress;
  • Ability to obtain CASAS proctor certification within 90 days of hire

Assistant Director or Coordinator of Family Literacy and Multilingual Learner Programs for Adult Education

Regional Director of Adult and Continuing Education

Work Schedule

This is a full‑time, academic‑year position, Monday through Thursday.

Compensation

Salary commensurate with experience and qualifications, in alignment with district salary guidelines for full‑time instructional staff.
