Ledyard Middle School is seeking a Long Term Substitute Special Education teacher for our RISE program beginning in February 2026 and continuing through the end of May (based on the needs of the district).
The Special Education Teacher will be responsible for curriculum and lesson planning and delivery, as well as assessing students and writing effective IEPs. Participation in interdisciplinary team meetings, PPTs, and parent meetings is an essential component of this position. The teacher must be skilled in providing on-going training and supervision to paraprofessionals and general educators in order to implement IEPs with fidelity.
Responsibilities- Plan and deliver curriculum and lessons for students in the RISE program.
- Assess students and write effective IEPs.
- Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings, PPTs, and parent meetings.
- Provide ongoing training and supervision to paraprofessionals and general educators to implement IEPs with fidelity.
- Connecticut Special Education Certification required (165, 065 or 265)
- 3+ years special education teaching experience (preferred but not mandatory)
- Training in and experience with implementing a behavior support program (preferred but not mandatory)
- Experience with providing executive functioning instruction to support general education access
Skills and Abilities
- Evidence of ability to work cooperatively with administrators, teachers and paraprofessionals
- Strong understanding of students with cognitive and behavioral disabilities
- Develop and implement Individual Education Plans (IEPs) designed to promote students' educational, physical, and/or social development
- Ability to communicate effectively with students and parents
- Demonstrated ability to write accurate and thorough assessment reports, IEPs and progress reports
- Ability to positively engage teachers, students and families in the learning process
- Ability to collaborate with colleagues to improve learning for all students
- Ability to use data to make instructional decisions
- The daily rate for substitute teachers is $130. For long term substitute positions (40+ days) the daily rate is $278.61 beyond the 40th consecutive day worked in the same assignment, for teachers with certification.
- Prolonged periods sitting at a desk or standing to teach.
- Must be able to lift up to 15 pounds at times.
- Must be able to traverse the classroom and adjust tone and height as needed to teach each child.
- Position may require physical interaction with students who have difficulty regulating emotions and controlling behavior.
- Occasional lifting, moving, or assisting other staff with physically escorting students.
