Position: Assistant Teacher (Early Learning Center)
Location: Kent

Under the supervision of the Director and in conjunction with the classroom’s Lead Teacher, assist in the management of a classroom of children. Work with the Director and other staff to develop and implement a developmentally appropriate curriculum, which addresses children’s developing skills, levels, and needs.

Must be available to work 10:30 am until 5:40 pm.

Responsibilities

In conjunction with the Director, Lead Teacher, and other staff, assist in planning and implementing a wide variety of developmentally appropriate activities that promote acquisition of curricular goals and objectives pertaining to the development of cognitive and physical (gross‑ and fine‑motor) growth, language development, positive self‑esteem, social skills and multicultural experiences in a material‑rich environment.

Familiarity with and ability to abide by all of the Center’s policies as outlined in the ELC’s ‘Staff Handbook’ including NAEYC’s ‘Code of Ethical Conduct’.

Work closely with classroom team to ensure that teamwork and communication is enhanced and maintained and a high quality program for children is provided at all times.

Develop and maintain an open and respectful relationship with parents. Provide care with regard for the parents’ wishes. Refer parental concerns to Lead Teacher and communicate pertinent issues to Lead Teacher or Director.

Provide a safe, healthy physical and emotional environment for all children. Develop and maintain a positive relationship with each child in the classroom. Actively supervise and interact with children regularly throughout the day; children should be supervised by sight and sound at all times.

Ensure that ongoing daily and weekly cleaning responsibilities are completed.

Professional growth; complete annual self‑evaluation; document ongoing staff development activities consistent with the professional development requirements including workshops, conferences, and in‑service training. Staff are required to complete 1 % of hours worked annually in professional development in conjunction with the State of CT Licensing Requirements.

Use positive discipline techniques to manage classroom behavior in accordance with the Center’s Discipline Policy; understand your role as a Mandated Reporter of Child Abuse.

Communicate and work cooperatively and respectfully with all staff members to ensure continuity of care. Fulfill any requests of the Director or Head Teacher.

Readily assist in any classroom with any task as necessary; assume basic responsibilities of classroom teacher as needed with a positive attitude.

Qualifications & Skills
  • Child Development Associate (CDA) or 12 credits in Early Childhood Education or active pursuit of coursework to obtain the certification.
  • Certification in First Aid and CPR.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality about issues related to children and their families while at the Center and outside the Center; a positive and professional attitude.
  • Ability to lift 40 lb.
Additional Requirements
  • Successful completion of post‑offer, pre‑employment criminal background checks and drug test.
  • Maintain punctual and regular attendance.
  • Work is performed on a smoke‑free campus.
