Special Education Teacher

Under the direction of the Director of Special Services and Building Principal, the Special Education Teacher provides specialized instruction and educational support to students with disabilities in accordance with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), district procedures, and applicable state and federal regulations. The Special Education Teacher promotes student achievement and growth across academic, social-emotional, communication, behavioral, executive functioning, adaptive, and functional skill areas while ensuring meaningful access to educational opportunities within the least restrictive environment (LRE).

The Special Education Teacher collaborates with students, families, educators, related service providers, and community partners to develop and implement individualized programming designed to meet student needs and support successful educational outcomes.

Knowledge, skills, and abilities required include:

  • Knowledge of special education principles, differentiated instruction, evidence-based instructional practices, behavioral supports, and inclusive educational practices.
  • Knowledge of IDEA, Section 504, FERPA, Connecticut special education regulations, IEP development, progress monitoring, data collection, and CTSEDS procedures.
  • Knowledge of curriculum standards and instructional strategies appropriate for students with disabilities.
  • Ability to develop and implement individualized instruction aligned with student needs and curriculum expectations.
  • Ability to analyze educational data and use information to guide instruction and decision-making.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with students, staff, families, related service providers, and community partners.
  • Strong communication, organization, problem-solving, and professional judgment skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of student information.
  • Ability to utilize educational technology and data systems effectively.

Qualifications profile:

  • Certification/Licensure:
    Valid Connecticut State Department of Education certification in Special Education required.
  • Preferred endorsements include: 165 Comprehensive Special Education, Grades K12 265 Comprehensive Special Education, Grades PK12.
  • Education:

    Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Special Education or a related field required. Master's degree preferred.
  • Experience:

    Successful prior teaching experience in special education or a related educational setting preferred. Experience with IEP development, case management, progress monitoring, CTSEDS, and multidisciplinary collaboration preferred. Experience implementing evidence-based instructional and behavioral interventions preferred.

  • Position Work Year: 182-day teacher work calendar in accordance with the district-approved school calendar.

    Salary placement in accordance with the applicable teacher collective bargaining agreement.
