Work Year: 182-day teacher work calendar in accordance with the district-approved school calendar and applicable teacher collective bargaining agreement.

Compensation:
Salary placement shall be in accordance with the applicable teacher collective bargaining agreement.

Position Purpose

Under the direction of the Director of Special Services and Building Principal, the Special Education Teacher provides specialized instruction and educational support to students with disabilities in accordance with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), district procedures, and applicable state and federal regulations.

The Special Education Teacher promotes student achievement and growth across academic, social-emotional, communication, behavioral, executive functioning, adaptive, and functional skill areas while ensuring meaningful access to educational opportunities within the least restrictive environment (LRE).

The Special Education Teacher collaborates with students, families, educators, related service providers, and community partners to develop and implement individualized programming designed to meet student needs and support successful educational outcomes.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities IEP Development and Case Management
  • Develops, implements, monitors, and revises Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) in accordance with district procedures and applicable state and federal regulations.
  • Serves as case manager for assigned students by coordinating special education services, facilitating communication among educational team members, monitoring compliance requirements, and ensuring implementation of each student's Individualized Education Program.
  • Participates in Planning and Placement Team (PPT) meetings and collaborates with educators, families, related service providers, and outside agencies to support student programming and progress.
  • Maintains accurate special education records, including service documentation, progress monitoring data, evaluation information, compliance records, and required timelines utilizing CTSEDS and other district data systems.
Instructional Responsibilities
  • Provides specialized instruction aligned with IEP goals and objectives in individual, small group, inclusive, co-taught, and specialized instructional settings.
  • Develops and implements differentiated instructional strategies based on student needs, learning profiles, and educational goals.
  • Implements accommodations, modifications, specialized instruction, transition supports, behavior intervention plans, executive functioning supports, and other services identified within student IEPs.
  • Supports students' academic, social-emotional, communication, behavioral, adaptive, and functional development consistent with individual student programming.
  • Collaborates with general education teachers to support student access to the general education curriculum and meaningful participation in classroom activities.
  • Utilizes assistive technology, instructional technology, and educational software applications to enhance student learning and access.
Assessment and Progress Monitoring
  • Conducts educational assessments, curriculum-based measures, progress monitoring, and evaluation activities consistent with certification requirements and district procedures.
  • Collects, analyzes, and maintains student performance data to monitor progress toward IEP goals and guide data-driven instructional decisions.
  • Interprets assessment results and prepares clear, accurate written reports and recommendations for PPT consideration.
  • Adjusts instruction and supports based upon student performance data and identified needs.
Student Support and Behavior
  • Utilizes positive behavioral supports, de-escalation strategies, and trauma-informed practices to promote student success and access to instruction.
  • Implements behavioral strategies and supports identified within student programming.
  • Supports students in developing independence, self-advocacy skills, and appropriate school behaviors.
  • Maintains a safe, supportive, and inclusive learning environment.
Collaboration and Professional Responsibilities
  • Maintains ongoing communication with parents and guardians regarding student progress, programming, and supports.
  • Collaborates with outside agencies, community providers, and state agencies as appropriate.
