Salary Range: $86,289.00-$ Yearly – Individuals new to state service start at the minimum of the pay plan.
Introduction: UConn’s Facilities Operations Department, Storrs Campus, has one opening for Power Plant Operator 2. The Co-Generation Plant produces high-pressure superheated steam, electrical power, and chilled water to supply energy to the Storrs campus. The plant includes three 7 MW Solar combustion turbines, a 5 MW steam turbine, and supporting equipment. A new Supplemental Utility Plant has been brought online with four chillers operational, and one boiler undergoing commissioning.
Operators may perform tasks at the South Campus Geothermal System and Chiller Plant under construction (expected operational late 2027).
Work Schedule:
Permanent, full-time with rotating days/shifts (eight-hour weekdays and twelve-hour weekends) across ten teams of four persons;
Emergency Support Services/Essential Staff. Willingness to work during emergencies, overtime, and during inclement weather or significant events. Must possess and retain a current motor vehicle operator license. Must be legally permitted to work in the United States. May be required to perform duties at any Regional Campus. Preference given to current UConn NP-2 employees who must submit an application to be considered.

Examples of DutiesPerforms highly skilled duties to ensure safe operation and production of high-pressure steam, electrical power, and chilled water; operates distributed control system; monitors cogeneration plant equipment (gas/steam turbines, boilers, feedwater, water chemistry, fuel system, emissions monitoring, cooling towers, etc.); makes adjustments within regulatory and manufacturer guidelines; notifies appropriate staff for adjustments or shutdown/startup; maintains logs and reports; may perform maintenance and repairs;
adheres to safety plans and emergency response protocols.
Knowledge of operation of cogeneration equipment, large high-pressure boilers, industrial instrumentation and control systems; arithmetic, reading schematics, safety practices; ability to interpret manuals, apply physics/thermodynamics/chemistry concepts, and use computer software; strong interpersonal and communication skills.
Minimum QualificationsGeneral
Experience:
Three (3) years of experience in a power plant or industrial setting involving operation, maintenance, and repair of steam boilers, generators, or similar equipment.
Note:
credited service length at management discretion.
Special
Experience:
One (1) year of General Experience must include work at a cogeneration plant or equivalent facility producing high-pressure steam, electrical power, and chilled water.
Note:
For State employees, interpreted at the Power Plant Operator 1 level.
- Trade school diploma in a related field may substitute for one year of General Experience.
- College coursework in mechanical engineering or related field may substitute for General Experience (fifteen semester hours equals one-half year, up to one year).
