Water Pollution Control Operator 1 (Anticipated) – Search #499413

Full‑time position located at UConn Storrs Campus, Facilities Operations. Salary range: $66,517.00–$85,519.00 per year for new state employees; hourly rate $31.86 for new hires.

Overview

The role is accountable for operating and maintaining the Class IV Water Resource Recovery Facility (WRRF), water reclamation processes, and associated lift stations. The incumbent supervises trainees and may lead Water Pollution Control Operator Trainees, work‑based learning students, and college student interns.

Work Schedule

1st Shift, 40 hrs/week. Work schedule is TBD: either Sunday – Thursday or Tuesday – Saturday.

Hours:

7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. with a paid half‑hour lunch. Weekend differential may apply.

Requisition Category

Emergency Support Services / Essential Staff. Must be willing to work during emergencies, inclement weather, or major campus events. Overtime (including nights, weekends, and holidays) may be required.

Responsibilities
  • Operate and maintain water pollution control equipment (grit chambers, step screens, bar racks, grinders, pumps, chemical dosing systems, dewatering systems, clarifier tanks, chlorination chambers, etc.).
  • Perform routine repairs and replace equipment such as valves, motors, pipes, and pumps.
  • Conduct biological and chemical analyses; record and interpret meter readings.
  • Prepare operational records, reports, and assist with fats, oils, and grease inspection and removal program.
  • Maintain facility cleanliness and support SCADA alarm response.
  • Assist with mechanical maintenance and general sanitation of building and grounds.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Understanding of large multi‑treatment water pollution control facilities and water reclamation processes.
  • Mechanical maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of pumps, tanks, and related equipment.
  • Laboratory sampling and analysis of wastewater and reclaimed water.
  • Interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with SCADA, water data management systems, and general office software (MS Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Ability to perform required chemical tests and keep accurate operational records.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Class I Wastewater Treatment Facility Operator Certificate (state‑issued) or equivalent, required at hire and to be maintained.
  • One year of experience operating a Class I or higher wastewater treatment facility, including mechanical maintenance and/or laboratory analysis.
  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Completion of a basic wastewater treatment facility operation course (approved by the commissioner) equaling at least nine CEU’s.
  • Valid motor vehicle operator license.
Special Requirements
  • Must retain all required DEEP certifications, licenses, or permits.
  • Physical ability to lift, carry, and push up to 75 lbs, walk stairs, climb ladders, and enter confined spaces.
  • Ability to operate motor vehicles (vans, trucks, pick‑ups) and landscape equipment (mowers, excavators).
  • Use of PPE when necessary.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience supervising employees, apprentices, or trainees in the wastewater field.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, including technical writing.
  • Experience with i‑Pad, laptop, or similar technology.
  • Proficient in MS Word, Excel, Outlook, and environmental data programs (e.g., GEIFIXX).
  • Related education or hands‑on training in environmental, chemistry, or mechanical disciplines.
  • Current Connecticut P‑1 or P‑2 license.
Physical and Working Conditions

Potential exposure to extreme weather, waste chemicals, loud machinery. Duties include lifting moderate weights, working in confined spaces, climbing ladders, and operating heavy machinery. Personal protective equipment is required.
