Town of Mansfield Position Announcement Assistant Building Official – Building and Housing Inspection Department The Opportunity

The Town of Mansfield ( www.mansfieldct.gov ) is hiring an Assistant Building Official. The Town is seeking a Assistant Building Official to perform complex, professional and technical work in the administration of building and housing code enforcement activities, and other code enforcement activities as assigned. This position serves as Acting Director of Building and Housing Inspection in the Director's absence, as assigned.

May supervise professional, technical, and clerical staff as assigned. Position reports to the Director of Building and Housing Inspection.

About Us

The Building and Housing Department enforces the Connecticut State Building code, Mansfield Housing code and associated Town ordinances. The codes are designed to protect public safety, provide safe and sanitary housing and to ensure minimum standards are met within the built environment. The Department works with citizens, tenants, landlords, contractors, design professionals and other stakeholders as needed to assist them in meeting and maintaining the goals of the various regulations within our purview.

We also work regularly with legal representation to achieve compliance.

Mansfield, with a population of approximately 26,000, is located in the Northeastern portion of the state, better known as Connecticut's Last Green Valley National Heritage Corridor. Home to the University of Connecticut, Mansfield offers the unique blend of urban (Downtown Storrs - www.mansfieldmdp.org ), suburban, and rural living in a university setting. Mansfield has a variety of cultural and educational offerings, as well as an abundance of natural resources ideal for activities such as hiking, cycling, and kayaking.

Mansfield is a Council-Manager form of government, with the Town Manager serving as the Chief Executive Officer responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Town.

Total Compensation

The salary range is $40.27 /hr ($73,573.29/yr) - $52.34/hr ($95,625.18/yr). H iring rate of pay will depend upon the selected candidate's qualifications and experience. This position is full-time with benefits. The Town of Mansfield provides an extremely competitive benefits package.

  • Mansfield participates in the Connecticut Municipal Retirement System (CMERS), a defined benefit pension plan, a variety of other benefits such as medical, vision, dental, life insurance, short-term and long-term disability insurance, tuition assistance, paid vacation and holidays.
Work Schedule & Location

The selected candidate will be scheduled for 35 hours per week, with a four day work week. The selected candidate will occasionally be required to perform evening, holiday, or weekend work when responding to emergencies that require a Building Official.

The work location is the Audrey Beck Municipal Building, 4 South Eagleville Road.

Education and Experience

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school and considerable experience in building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical and zoning code enforcement and inspections work. Consideration will be given to equivalent experience, education, and training.

The selected candidate must be a licensed Assistant Building Official at time of hire or appointment to the position. Successful completion of the International Code Council Building Inspector Exam and Code Enforcement Exam is required within one year of hire or appointment to the position. Candidates are required to possess a valid driver's license. Incumbents must maintain their required licensures during the course of their employment with the Town.
