Job Title
Athletic Trainer
Position OverviewThe Athletic Trainer provides comprehensive sports medicine services to Branford Public Schools student-athletes, including injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, emergency care, and return-to-play management. The role serves as the primary healthcare professional for the district's athletic programs and collaborates with physicians, coaches, school personnel, parents, and student-athletes to promote health, safety, and athletic performance.
Key Responsibilities Sports Medicine and Student‑Athlete Care- Provide comprehensive athletic training services, including injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, rehabilitation, and emergency care for student-athletes.
- Assess athletic injuries and develop appropriate treatment and rehabilitation plans within the scope of professional practice and physician standing orders.
- Coordinate return-to-play and return-to-learn protocols for injured student-athletes.
- Maintain accurate and confidential medical records in accordance with Connecticut licensing requirements, district policies, and applicable privacy laws.
- Serve as the primary liaison between student-athletes, families, physicians, coaches, and school personnel regarding athletic injuries and medical concerns.
- Oversee implementation and compliance with CIAC health and safety requirements.
- Manage district concussion protocols, including injury reporting, documentation, return-to-play progression, and compliance monitoring.
- Coordinate compliance with sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) requirements and related student-athlete education.
- Monitor environmental conditions and implement heat acclimatization and weather-related safety protocols, including wet bulb globe temperature (WBGT) guidelines.
- Ensure emergency action plans are maintained and followed at athletic venues.
- Attend and provide on-site medical coverage for all home athletic contests and regular season games.
- Attend and provide on-site medical coverage for all away tournaments, conferences, or state postseason events that are hosted at either on-campus facilities or off‑campus venues.
- Dedicated on-site attendance for all home and away varsity and junior varsity football games.
- Maintain a visible presence at daily practices and games to provide immediate injury evaluation, treatment, and support.
- Design and implement strength and conditioning programs to improve athletic performance and reduce injury.
- Educate student-athletes, coaches, and families on injury prevention, nutrition, hydration, and wellness practices.
- Assist with day-to-day athletic department operations and special projects as assigned by the Athletic Director.
- Maintain athletic training room equipment, supplies, and inventory.
- Manage athletic electronic medical record (EMR) systems and related documentation.
- Audit student-athlete physical examinations and participation requirements to ensure compliance.
- Assist with departmental planning, event preparation, and operational procedures.
- Participate in professional development opportunities and remain current with developments and best practices related to training, sports medicine, and student‑athlete health and safety.
- Collaborate with coaches, administrators, healthcare providers, and community partners to support student-athlete success.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Athletic Director.
- Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Athletic Training or related field required.
- Experience working in high school athletics environments preferred.
- Experience with concussion management programs and athletic electronic medical record systems.
- Experience designing strength and conditioning programs preferred.
- Hold and maintain current Connecticut Athletic Trainer License, required.
- Hold and maintain current Board of Certification (BOC) certification, required.
- Hold and maintain current CPR/AED and First Aid certification, required.
- National Athletic Trainers' Association (NATA) membership preferred.
- Knowledge of athletic training principles, injury prevention, rehabilitation, and emergency care.
- Knowledge of CIAC regulations and student-athlete safety requirements.
- Ability to assess injuries and implement appropriate treatment protocols.
- Strong organizational and recordkeeping skills.
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Ability to use Microsoft Office and Google applications and to learn other district software.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, families, staff, healthcare providers, and community partners.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work effectively in a fast-paced environment.
