Nuclear Medicine Technologist

Position at Sharon Hospital

Summary:

Prepares, measures and administers radiopharmaceuticals for use in diagnostic and therapeutic studies. Performs and assists with nuclear medicine studies. Is responsible for patient safety protocols. Maintains all federal, state, local and regulatory agency requirements.

1. Receives, handles, stores, calibrates, prepares and administers radiopharmaceuticals to patients under the direct supervision of a Radiologist.

2. Follows established medication safety procedures to reduce the potential for medication errors.

3. Demonstrates the ability to organize patient care and set priorities by providing critical care first and by implementing the physician's order.

4. Reviews consultation request, checking for special instructions from requesting physicians consulting with radiologist as necessary.

5. Obtains patient history and clinical data for correlation with scans.

6. Demonstrates a complete knowledge of all equipment located within the Nuclear Medicine including PACS, Meditech and Syntrac.

7. Calibrates equipment, performs and documents QC according to department protocol: recognizes and takes appropriate action for abnormal results. Reports atypical variations to radiology director, medical physicist or maintenance.

8. Performs routine and emergent nuclear imaging and therapeutic procedures.

9. Applies knowledge of department, NRC, state of CT regulations and radiation safety principles to ensure patient and staff safety.

10. Maintains computerized patient and departmental records, ensuring archive integrity, billing accuracy and isotope tracking.

11. Adheres to radiation safety techniques and policies in the use and disposal of radioactive materials.

12. Provides care appropriate to condition and age of the patient.

13. Provides patient and family education related to nuclear imaging.

Regulatory Requirements:

· AS or BS degree preferred.

· Graduation from approved school of Nuclear Medicine.

· Certified by the ARRT or registered by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board.

· Current BCLS certification.
