We are seeking an experienced and motivated Marine Upholsterer to lead daily operations within our marine upholstery and canvas department. This is a hands-on leadership role. The ideal candidate combines advanced marine upholstery expertise with strong organizational and leadership skills.
Key Responsibilities Department Leadership & Operations- Supervise and coordinate daily operations of the marine upholstery department
- Assign projects, manage workflow, and prioritize production schedules to meet deadlines
- Train, mentor, and support department team members
- Monitor productivity, workmanship, and quality control standards
- Collaborate with management and service advisors regarding project timelines, specifications, and expectations
- Maintain department organization, inventory, and material usage efficiency
- Ensure compliance with company safety standards and safe equipment operation
- Assist in hiring, onboarding, and performance evaluations of department personnel
- Measure, pattern, cut, sew, and assemble marine upholstery and canvas products as needed
- Fabricate and repair cushions, bolsters, seating, enclosures, covers, and related marine soft goods
- Work with marine-grade fabrics, vinyls, foams, threads, and hardware
- Operate industrial sewing machines and upholstery equipment safely and efficiently
- Install finished products on vessels when required
- Repair and modify existing upholstery to match original design and fit
- Read drawings, templates, specifications, and verbal instructions to produce finished products accurately
- Troubleshoot fabrication challenges and provide technical guidance to team members
- Proven experience in marine upholstery, marine canvas fabrication, or related upholstery field
- Prior supervisory, lead technician, or team leadership experience preferred
- Advanced sewing and fabrication skills using industrial sewing machines
- Strong knowledge of marine upholstery materials, techniques, and installation methods
- Ability to manage multiple projects and production schedules simultaneously
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to craftsmanship
- Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work independently while leading a team effectively
- Physical ability to lift materials and work in both shop and marina environments
- Reliable, punctual, and safety-conscious
- Experience with custom marine canvas including biminis, enclosures, and covers
- Familiarity with snap systems, zippers, binding, foam shaping, and patterning
- Previous experience in a boatyard or marine service environment
- Basic computer and estimating skills
- Experience ordering materials and managing inventory
- Primarily shop-based with occasional onboard vessel work
- Exposure to marine conditions including heat, humidity, confined spaces, and varying weather conditions
- Fast-paced production and service environment with multiple active projects
