Position: Laboratory Technician 1 - Chemistry
Location: Storrs

JOB SUMMARY

The Department of Chemistry is seeking a Laboratory Technician 1 to assist in servicing chemistry courses on the Storrs campus. Under the direction of the Chemistry Laboratory Manager, the incumbent will work under the Chemistry Department’s Teaching Laboratory Services unit, which supports the Chemistry Department’s undergraduate laboratory operations.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Prepare and test routine laboratory experiments for undergraduate courses.
  • Assist in the modification of experiments as needed.
  • Work with a full range of chemicals to prepare reagents and solutions for experiments.
  • Set up and maintain equipment for laboratory experiments safely and quickly in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Dismantle, clean, and inspect equipment after use.
  • Frequently move waste containers and reagent trays weighing up to 25 lbs to and from laboratory benches, under‑hood cabinets, and carts.
  • Create and provide procedural notes for teaching assistants (TAs), and assist TAs with routine technical problems related to laboratory exercises.
  • Assist with identifying and resolving routine experimental problems.
  • Assist in the maintenance and minor repair of lab equipment to ensure safe use and proper operation.
  • Monitor inventory levels and ensure the security of supplies and equipment.
  • Assist in creating and maintaining appropriate records including standard operating procedures, experimental checklists, and safety documentation.
  • Work assigned schedule, which varies by semester to support morning, afternoon, and evening classes, with the possible future addition of weekend classes.
  • Assist with the enforcement of departmental safety rules.
  • Perform related tasks as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or a related field and one to two years of experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with concepts, practices, and standard laboratory procedures in chemistry.
  • Demonstrated experience with commonly accepted safety practices in chemistry.
  • Demonstrated experience explaining laboratory procedures.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail.
  • Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • B.S. degree in Chemistry.
  • Prior work experience in a laboratory setting.
  • Experience writing and communicating laboratory procedures and results in a professional setting.
  • Ability to engage, connect and work with diverse student, administrative, and faculty populations and provide a commitment to the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion in an educational setting.
  • Proficient in Microsoft PowerPoint.
APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full‑time, permanent position. The University offers a competitive salary, and outstanding benefits, including employee and dependent tuition waivers at UConn, and a highly desirable work environment. The position requires the ability to occasionally move containers and trays weighing up to 25 pounds, to and from locations varying in height from 10 to 36 inches. The selected incumbent will be required to work weekends and evenings, as needed.
