Overview
Connecticut State Police is seeking Trustworthy, motivated, and driven individuals to enroll in the State Police Trooper Training Academy. Applicants will receive formal academic training, classroom instruction, practical exercises, and physical conditioning over a 28‑week period. Upon successful completion, graduates are assigned to a State Police Troop and begin a probationary period before becoming an active State Police Trooper.
Compensation and Benefits- Trooper Trainee, 6 months: TR $66,530
- Trooper Trainee, Certified 2+ years: TR $76,229
- Meal allowance: 2.5 hours pay per week (5 hours per pay period)
- Graduation pay for Trooper Trainees:
- SP 2/1 – $73,922 – 1‑year working test period
- SP 2/2 – $76,229 – 6‑month working test period
- Stipends after graduation:
- Annual Wellness Stipend – $500
- Educational Stipend – $500
- Equipment Stipend – $150
- Receive formal and field instruction on basic police science courses, motor vehicle law, arrest techniques, criminal law, search and seizure, evidence rules, interviewing, traffic control, firearms use, courtroom procedure, modern investigative methods (fingerprinting, ballistics, photography, handwriting), public relations, and police ethics.
- Participate in civil disorder and riot control training.
- Complete accident investigation and first‑aid training.
- Engage in physical training and self‑defense tactics.
- Apply classroom knowledge to on‑the‑job training with supervisors in a deployed troop.
- Progressively handle increasing responsibilities while exercising independent judgment.
- Perform related duties as required throughout the training and probationary periods.
Ability to learn and retain information; analyze facts and make decisions; solve problems; interpret emergency situations and develop effective actions; work effectively with others; understand and communicate oral and written instructions; apply reasoning ability.
Minimum QualificationsExperience or training that demonstrates the knowledge, skill and ability listed above.
Preferred Qualifications- Experience responding to public inquiries via phone, email or face‑to‑face interaction.
- Related education or work experience in criminal justice.
- Military experience.
- Prior law‑enforcement experience.
- Experience working under challenging conditions, including extreme weather.
- Experience in conflict resolution.
- Proficiency with computer systems (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, Electronic Record).
- Lifesaving/Medical certifications: CPR, EMR, EMT, Paramedic.
- Applicants must be 21 years old.
- Applicants must possess a high school diploma or GED.
- Applicants must pass a Physical Ability test before appointment.
- Applicants must establish residence in Connecticut before completion of the Academy.
- Applicants must maintain a current Connecticut Motor Vehicle Oper‑ator’s license during employment.
In addition to reference checks, a thorough character investigation may be conducted before appointment.
Physical RequirementsComprehensive medical and physical examinations will be required upon a conditional offer. Applicants must demonstrate sufficient strength, stamina, agility, endurance, vision and hearing to perform the duties of a State Police Trooper.
