$22.28/hr as outlined in the current UPSEU Local 424-Unit 52 Contract

37.5 hours per week – 10 months, flexible, possible summer hours.

• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Three (3) years' experience as a law enforcement officer, corrections officer, or similar role, demonstrating successful work with adolescents
• Holds a valid CT Driver's License

The School Security Guard (SSG) will support the school administration, faculty and staff in promoting a safe and positive school environment. The SSG is a visible and active figure at the school and shall be charged with safeguarding and protecting the school community and school property while promoting a positive school climate for all who enter the school.

• Integrity, moral character, and initiative.
• Comprehensive knowledge of principles and practices of unarmed security work within a school setting, use of force, restraint and de‑escalation, access control procedures, active threat response, and other emergency response protocols.
• Ability to handle multiple tasks, prioritize activities with minimal supervision, and use computers for simple tasks such as email and internet research.
• Observation and accurate determination of effective course of action.
• Work within chain of command to resolve problems and cooperatively with diverse people (students, teachers, police officers, principals, parents, etc.).
• Effective, respectful and courteous communication.
• Resourceful, accurate, reliable, punctual and accountable in all matters.

• Detect, prevent, or respond to unauthorized activity on or around school grounds.
• Monitor access of buildings and grounds, ensure doors are closed and locked, and deter unauthorized entry.
• Patrol halls and check classroom doors for security.
• Respond to situations jeopardizing student or staff welfare in accordance with applicable laws and Board policy.
• Use physical force in compliance with State law, regulation, and Board policy.
• Abide by all Board Policies and Regulations.
• Monitor parking lots during school arrival and dismissal.
• Assist administrators or staff in locating missing students.
• Identify and report hazardous conditions.
• Assist with medical emergencies within training and expertise.
• Help develop and implement plans to prevent or minimize dangerous situations on school grounds.
• Act as liaison and notify appropriate public safety or EMS first responders as directed.
• Participate in professional development as required.
• Meet and greet students, staff, and the public respectfully.
• Identify and accost unauthorized persons, taking appropriate action as needed.
• Carry legally prescribed identification card at all times while on school property.
• Call police for assistance when needed.
• Wear the distinctive uniform or insignia designated by the Board under all circumstances.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or building principal.
• Conduct searches or seizures when a direct threat to students or staff is present.
• Question students or staff accused of unlawful activity in the absence of a building administrator during a direct threat situation.

Prolonged sitting, driving, standing, and walking; lifting and carrying up to 50 pounds; reaching, squatting, climbing stairs, kneeling, moving light furniture or equipment; walking several hours in hallways and outdoors. Must tolerate heat and cold outside seasonal temperatures.

• General knowledge of safety in motor vehicle operation.
• Knowledge of universal hygiene precautions.
• Basic first aid and CPR training.

The work may be performed outside in seasonal temperatures as well as indoors. Work is conducted during daylight and night hours. Flexibility and patience are required; work may involve ropes, chains, locks, pylons, and gates. The candidate must be self‑motivated and able to complete assignments without direct supervision and work under stressful conditions.

No firearms will be authorized or carried at any time in the performance of these duties.

• SSG shall not interfere with the responsibilities of the school administration.
• SSG shall have no role in taking disciplinary action against any students.
• SSG shall not access educational record information except in accordance with Board policy, FERPA, and applicable state law.

The Principal, Assistant Principal, or Dean of Students shall evaluate the School Security Guard in accordance with District Policy.
