Job Definition
Under minimal supervision, the Maintenance/Custodial Foreman performs skilled labor in several trades related to the maintenance and repair of buildings and equipment. The role involves providing professional advice to custodial staff and executing tasks in the building trades with a high level of skill and independence. The foreman reports to the Sites & Facilities Coordinator or a designee.
Essential Job Functions- Assure prompt and timely completion of assigned work orders by directing personnel to various jobs.
- Coordinate maintenance center operations and arrange equipment use.
- Provide technical assistance to maintenance and custodial crews.
- Ensure completion of emergency jobs after normal working hours.
- Train crew members in correct and safe equipment operation.
- Maintain and repair buildings, equipment, furniture, cabinets, doors, windows, framing, and grounds.
- Perform drywall installation, patching, texturing, and repair.
- Use hand and power tools safely to perform assigned duties.
- Assist in interpreting plans and specifications.
- Operate automotive equipment, forklifts, man-lifts, and other equipment.
- Load trucks with equipment or supplies and deliver to destinations.
- Maintain inventory of materials, equipment, and tools.
- Provide training for new personnel.
- Conduct regular inspections and routine maintenance to protect district buildings.
- Monitor work crews and conduct follow‑up inspections to ensure maintenance quality.
- Aid in developing the annual budget and uphold budget guidelines by prioritization and accurate record‑keeping.
- Manage cost‑effective operations through proper care of equipment, tools, materials, and supplies.
- Estimate materials and labor requirements for assigned tasks.
- Assign work to personnel based on written work orders.
- Maintain accurate records of work orders, equipment, tools, materials, and supplies.
- Implement safety regulations and accident prevention programs in work areas.
- Perform other related duties as assigned and meet performance standards.
The position may involve exposure to inclement weather, climbing ladders, and working in cramped or small spaces. Lifting, carrying, or maneuvering heavy objects exceeding 100 pounds is a regular function.
Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
Knowledge:
- Operations, methods, practices, materials, tools, equipment, and terminology used in the trade.
- Applicable building codes.
- Maintenance methods and practices for tools, machinery, and equipment.
- Occupational hazards and safety practices.
- Physical ability to attend work and perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.
- Read and understand oral and written instructions.
- Work effectively without close supervision.
- Retain a state‑of‑teaching or supervising license as required.
- Make accurate mathematical calculations.
- Hold a valid Connecticut driver’s license and maintain insurable status as required.
- Adhere to federal drug‑free workplace requirements.
- Communicate clearly in speech and writing.
High school diploma and one to two years of advanced education or experience specific to the job requirements. Experience as a foreman or supervisor in related work is required. Demonstrated knowledge of technical procedures and the ability to teach them to others is necessary. In‑depth knowledge of district policies and practices is essential. Job proficiency can be achieved in six months to one year.
