DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Has the ability to organize and supervise a total sports program.
  • Has previous successful coaching experience in assigned sport (major sports).
  • The head coach must have substantial knowledge of the technical aspects of the sport and continue to examine new theories and procedures pertinent to the field.
  • The head coach must serve as an appropriate role model for student athletes through his/her instructions and actions.
  • Reports to the athletic director, who provides overall objectives and final evaluation in conjunction with the high school principals.
  • Supervises a staff of high school assistant coaches and middle school coaches in partnership with the athletic director and respective principal.
  • Instruct athletes in fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary for individual and team success, while modeling socially acceptable behavior, self‑discipline, self‑confidence, and pride of accomplishment.
  • Continues professional development through coaching clinics, observations, and consultation.
ADMINISTRATIVE DUTIES
  • Ensures implementation of all athletic policies approved by the Plainwell Community Schools' Board of Education.
  • Applies state and league regulations consistently and interprets them for staff.
  • Understands administrative line of command and routes all requests or grievances through proper channels.
STAFF RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Establishes fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by staff.
  • Designs conferences, clinics, and staff meetings to ensure staff awareness of the overall program.
  • Trains and informs staff, encouraging professional growth through clinic attendance per local policy.
  • Delegates specific duties, supervises implementation, and evaluates assistants at season’s end.
  • Maintains discipline, addresses grievances, and works to increase morale and cooperation.
  • Performs other duties assigned by the athletic director/principal.
STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Serves as a mentor, promoting character traits such as trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, caring, and citizenship.
  • Monitors athlete grades and conduct.
  • Provides presence, assistance, guidance, and safeguards at all practices, games, and travel.
  • Distributes training rules and sport-specific regulations to each athlete.
  • Initiates injury, medical, and emergency programs.
  • Fills out and submits required injury paperwork within 24 hours.
  • Directs student managers, assistants, and statisticians.
  • Determines discipline, enforces due process, and communicates with parents regarding eligibility.
  • Assists athletes in college or advanced educational selection.
FINANCE AND EQUIPMENT
  • Participates in budgeting with the athletic director, establishing equipment needs for the next season.
  • Recommends equipment specifications and operates within budgetary limits.
  • Accounts for all equipment, collecting losses or non‑returns.
  • Manages issuance, storage, reconditioning, and annual inventory of equipment.
  • Marks and identifies all equipment before issuing or storing.
  • Monitors equipment rooms, authorizes access, and enforces security.
  • Ensures athletes only use authorized areas at appropriate times.
  • Inspects locker rooms for cleanliness and maintains equipment hygiene.
  • Secures doors, lights, windows, and locks when custodians are unavailable.
  • Instills respect for equipment and school property among players.
PUBLIC RELATIONS
  • Organizes preseason meetings with parents, coaches, players, and guests.
  • Promotes the sport internally by recruiting athletes not engaged in other sports and externally through news media, little league programs, and other feasible methods.
  • Ensures the quality, effectiveness, and validity of all media releases.
  • Maintains good relations with news media, booster club, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans.
  • Provides information to news media concerning schedules, tournaments, and results.
