EssentialJob Summary
The Dispatcher coordinates daily waste collection operations, serving as the central communication hub between drivers, supervisors and customers. The role optimizes vehicle deployment, responds to operational challenges, promotes safety, and monitors and removes hazards. The position requires a self‑directed individual capable of establishing and documenting live‑dispatch procedures.
Essential Job Functions- Establish and maintain positive relationships with drivers and depot/transfer station staff.
- Ensure drivers and trucks are utilized to their full potential.
- Manage daily truck activity to maintain driver productivity commensurate with hours worked.
- Set up crew sheets and notify all employees of their schedules.
- Monitor hours worked and ensure DOT compliance for drivers.
- Assess driver performance, provide coaching, and discipline as necessary.
- Ensure compliance with safety policies, protocols, and all applicable regulations.
- Conduct routine truck and equipment inspections to ensure proper care and maintenance.
- Review driver requests for container switches or repairs; enter service tickets into the company database.
- Document accidents and injuries; distribute reports to Safety and Risk teams for follow‑up.
- Prepare and deliver regular reports to Senior Management.
- Field calls from customer service and handle appropriately.
- If a call is related to service not performed, confirm with the driver.
- Monitor the dispatch mailbox and handle requests appropriately.
- Identify missed pick‑ups, dispose of them within 60 minutes, and monitor system for driver progress, comments, skips, extras.
- Conduct employee check‑in procedures: inspect DVIR, route cover sheet, dump tickets, and route closure in the system.
- Reschedule blocked customers and tag any extra pick‑ups in the system.
- Follow up with exceptions, stop services, missed stops, on‑call work orders, and review pictures.
- Close out outstanding tickets in the system.
- Act on loaded truck lists at end of day.
- Monitor the call‑out line and adjust route and scheduling as necessary.
- Coordinate with other sites for equipment as needed.
- Monitor and manage idle time.
- Ensure accurate geocoding of stops.
- Manage tablet inventory and ensure consistent tablet use across all routes.
- Send timely and accurate service alert notifications to customers.
- Optimize driver assignments to maximize efficiency and minimize overtime.
- Work with the route optimization team and drivers to make routes more efficient.
- Respond appropriately to vehicle breakdowns, accidents, or other field emergencies.
Requirements
- 3+ years of dispatching experience.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to remain calm and focused under pressure.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently.
- Strong organization and time‑management skills.
- Demonstrated commitment to workplace safety.
- Knowledge of applicable traffic, transportation, and other laws and regulations.
- Intermediate to excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Excel.
- Defensive Driving (knowledge of Smith System).
- Basic understanding of vehicle operations and limitations.
- May require occasional field visits to understand route challenges.
- May require early morning, evening, or weekend hours based on operational needs.
Preferred experiences & skills
- Fluency in Spanish (preferred, not required).
- Completion of a relevant undergraduate degree or certificate program.
- Experience in waste management, transportation, or a related industry.
- Experience working with operations software and tablet solutions.
USD $70,000.00/Yr.
Salary Range MaximumUSD $90,000.00/Yr.
